uia.u movement irom ureffon naf
lowed up perceptibly and wilt "not last much
longer. New potatoes are cheaper In the
southern market than Oregons can be put
there for. even at the prevailing low. prices.
In California the 1917 and 1018 crops are
competing for the favor of the consumer, so
that most of the movement In that direc
tion la to the Stockton district for seed pur
poses. There is practically no movement
northward from here. Even Montana still
has some of its own small crop on band, so
that potatoes are cheaper in Butte than in
Portland, when the opper grades are con
sidered, although plenty of Inferior stock
ay be bought here at most any price. With
that situation, the potato season may be con
sidered ended here. In his weeklv review
of the potato situation, R. L. Ringer, in
-charge of the local office of the Bureau of
. Markets, says: .
"For the first time this year the ship-
old. The crest of production Is already
passed In Florida, and from now on Texas,
Louisiana and South Carolina will be the
dominating figures for a while. In the
north, Michigan and Wisconsin are still
rolling out their big crop, but for the most
part the shipments of old stock are consid
erably curtailed.
"Prices have ruled firm the past week,
with a slight advance In most sections. That
is because of the Increasing difficulty of
getting desirable stock from the stuff in
storage. There are plenty of potatoes In
Oregon, but only a portion are merchantable
at an attractive price. The result is that
many growers are feeding them as they
come rather than use high-priced help to
sort and sprout them.
"In the Southeast, prices for new stock
have advanced about 50c to 75c per barrel
the past week, while sacked stock is hold
ing about the same. At Eagle Lake. Tex.,
Silas Triumphs bring 11.20 to S1.S5 per cwt,
sacked. In Los Angeles, new stock Is Job
bing at 70c to 80c per lug box, while a week
ago It was bringing SOc to XI. On the Chi
cago market. Wisconsin round whites,
sacked, are still going at SI .15 to 11-25.
Louisiana new stock is moving at 81.85. A
week ago it brought 12.

"This bulletin has been Issued In the
Northwest since November L" The last num
ber will be sent out May 29. It is the pres
ent plan of the Bureau of Markets to re
sume publication in the Fall, -when the 1918
crop is ready to move, about October 15 or
November 1. In the meantime occasional
bulletins giving the condition and prospects
of the growing crop may be issued so that
all concerned with the Industry may under
stand the conditions .under which it will
have to be marketed. During the period
this bulletin ha been issued the prices have
decreased 50 per cent In the Northwest.
When It started the growers of Yakima were
being offered 835 per ton. Many of them re
fused to sell. That stock came out of storage
to find a $15 to 820 market. Potatoes were
held at the high prices until it was so late
that In spite of a National campaign to in
crease consumption, the people could- not
consume the 442,000,000 bushels that were
produced In 1917.-'

CHEAPER LEMONS ARE NOT EXPECTED
Stoppage of Imports From Sicily Responsible
for High Prices.
No decline in the lemon market this side
of the close of the Bummer season is expect
ed. The high price is due to. the fact that
practically no Sicily lemons are being im
ported and California rjtock consequently
brings big prices in the Eastern auction
markets, which set the pace for the rest of
the country- A car of Florida - grapefruit
is due early in the week and w another car
the last of the season Is roiling. Bananas
are tending upward and even at the advance
the trade cannot get all Its orders filled.
The continued cool weather Is retarding
the growth of local vegetables to such an ex
tent as to ore's te-a scarcity In the market, as
Jobbers are cautious about bringing up heavy
shipments from the south. California toma
toes are being quoted, but shipments may not
begin before May 29 or 30.

Reviewing the cattle situation at the
yards, the Livestock Reporter says:
"From all appearances the winter supply
of fed catUe U about cleaned up. with the
exception of several bunches. Demand for
fat cattle at the present time is good and
anyone holding this sort of cattle should
not hesitate in sending them this way. for
prices will be very satisfactory. Killers
from now on will have to depend on the bet
ter grade of grasser for their beef and the
trade can parity expect anything real fat
In this line for probably 60 days. There
was a load of grass cat'.le here yesterday
from Pasco that were fa.rly good; In fact,
the best seen here this Spring, but they
needed to be put out another 60 days to
have made strictly good beef out of them,
and, furthermore, they were of the kind to
make it. These cattle went across the scale
at 812.76, which was 25 cent better than a
load from the Grssi Valley section realised
Monday. Several other load sold from
81 1 12. but carried very little flesh. Thinner
grades sold down to 10 cents, with off
grade, thin type from 8899.
"Strictly fat. fed cattle are In demand,
particularly all killer would be able to use
some of these kind If offered. "What few
small bunches of strictly fat beef eteera
have been here during the week brought
around 14 cent. From all appearances, kill
ers could use quite a supply of these grkdes
at theee figures, provided that they were
strictly fat.
"As for the ordinary grades of killer, the
market has shown hardly any Improvement,
although sellers have been able to clean
up fairly well. Ordinary cow are selling
from 86.60 97.60, with the more ordinary,
off-grade types down to 6 cent. The hide
and rib sort As selling from 4 cents up.
"Bulla have been plentiful all week, and
for the first time since last Fall the de
mand has been limited. Holder are having
a rather hard time in getUng satisfactory
bids. Best heavy bulls are bringing from
87.60 to 88.50, with the fairly decent kind
around 7 cent. Thinner grade are get
ting from 86 to 86.50. Veal calve were
steady."

HmsJl Demand for Hope.
The hop market is very quiet, with only a
small demand for spot or new good a A lot
of 1917s was sold during the week at 14
cents.
In England, according- to recent mail ad
vices, there are no "hops left In growers'
or dealers' hands, bat occasionally a small
lot appears -on tne market, when some
brewer Is willing to take a profit, and such
lots are snapped up immediately at the
maximum price permitted by the Govern
ment. Crop 'prospects In England are fair,
but work in the hopyards Is difficult on ac
count of labor shortage.
Coffee Import Restricted.
NEW YORK, May 25. Ths feature tn ths
coffee market today was further regulation
by the Government restricting Imports of
coffee to freight room available at the
freight rates fixed by the United States
Shipping Hoard. The first impression ap
peared to be that this ruling- would cause
a reduction in Imports and the market
opened at an advance of 5 to 10 points on
covering. .Later, however, the trade seemed
feel that the -ruling as to ocean freight
would merely tend to maintain a reasonable
parity between domestic snd primary mar
kets, and prices sagged off. December sold
at 8. SOc early and later at 8.45c, while July

BEARISH SENTIMENT IX CORN PIT
Weather Condition Play Important Part in
Week's Trading.
CHICAGO. May 25. Notwithstanding that
fear of delay to th completion of seeding
brought about numerous rallies la the corn
market, bearish eentlment this week had
an unmistakable predominance. The fact
that rain were interfering with planting to
a material extent was generally conceded,
but eome of the' section that received the
heaviest downpour were where moisture
wsa needed most tor wheat and other crop.
Gossip that farmers still had liberal re
serves of corn and that the movement after
planting would be large, tended also to
weaken values.
Oat were relatively strong la sympathy
with advance In Winnipeg and because of
temporary congestion in the May option
here. The removal of the last dry spot
from the domestic grain belt, though, acted
aa omethlnaiof an offset- . -
k Provisions lacked support. At times busi
ness was aearly at a standstill.

moment. Wireless antennae were laid,
which would a-ive an Idea of the dis
tance from the camp of the aendinar
station, the insistent - repeating; of

sending of a confidential message to
an unknown agent.
The antennae showed the message
emanated not more than a mile from
division headquarters. Then the plant
was traced to the base hospital. Tin
mysterious radio station proved to be
the X-ray room of the base hospital,
where pictures are taken every day.
The operator of the apparatus pressed e
a small key several times daily. It
made an electric contact which, un
consciously formed the sign "H-8." The
telephone wire in the room seized the
vibrations by induction and carried
them through the telephone exchange
of the base hospital through the camp
telephone exchange In the cable-aerial,
which has within 26 pairs of wires for
the headquarter building.. The del
icately attuned wires of the recelvinB
sets of the eiKnal Corps had picked up
the mystic word-sign.
