John AJlen. Tacoma soldier stationed
at Camp Mills, Long Island, raised
S25.0OO for the third liberty loan In
a New York theater the other day. A
flying squadron from the campaign waa
gnln? through the audience seeking the
soldier from the point' farthest from
New York, Allen waa the man. "Who
will buy a bond to get this boy
across?" the audience was asked.
"Uncle Same has enough money to
get me across, but where will he get
the money to enable me to get back."
Allen apoke up.
I ll buy $10,000 worth of bond to
see that this boy gets home," said One,
"I'll take tbe same." asserted an
other. -Put me down for 15000,"

cial) Thirteen young men from The
Dalles were accepted as naval recruits,
following tbe visit here of Lieutenant
M. C. Kemp. Assistant Surgeon P. T.
Mason. Chief Yaoman II. G. rost and
Mate G. K. McDonnell, all of the United
States Navy. The young men who have
enlisted, following an examination are:
Loren C. Koberts, William C Fease,
James M. Lium. Lewis C Falmer, Hay-
ward Slacey, John Jones, Harry J. Wir-
rlck, Henry W. Shrrrer. Jacob Sberrer,
Edgar Harrison, Guasle I. Derthlck,
William Calvin Cohoon and Lyden C.
Borders, the latter enlisting as a hos
pital apprentice. These men expect to
be called to active service In the near
future.

WASHINGTON, May 11. More than
1,300,000 men have been called In the
draft o far and either aro In France
In camp, or under call to go Into service
before June 1. The total of 1,300.000 in
cludes all men summoned-in the May
contingent.
There Is every Indication that even
larger increment will be summoned In
June than was summoned in May, and
a progressive monthly mobilization
continue through the Summer and Fall
months aa the cantonment are ex
panded. It is thought that at such a rata the
Army will report a full strength of
well over 3,000.000 within the next IS
or IS months. It In -possible, some of

closer to 5,000.000 than 3,000,000.
Although American troop are 'going
overseas in large numbers the Ord
nance Department has been able to keep
up with the new programme, and every
soldier wh boards A transport is fully
equipped with arm, the ordnance
bureau announced today.
Artillery and machine guns already
are in r ranee in suxnclent quantities,
it waa said, to meet immediate needs.
The statement said:
"The Army Ordnance Department has
thus tar met every demand imposed by
tne new programme for overseas ship
ment or American troops.
"Despite the great acceleration in the
sending of American force to France,
no Infantryman goes aboard ship with
out a model 1917 rifle (modified En
field), bayonet belt, haversack, pack
carriers, bandoliers, bayonet scabbard
and full mess equipment.
Ship Supply Inadequate.
"Tonnage Is today a limiting factor
In the shipment of ordnance, material
overseas, especially because of the
present necessity of Increasing the
transport of Infantry regiments.
Sufficient supplies of artillery, French
75-mllllmeter and 153-millimeter and
American heavy railway artillery, are
already in France to meet the present
demand. Sufficient machine guns are
also Immediately available for Amer
ican forces In France. -
Tacoma to Handle Whale Oil.
TACOMA, Wash., May 11. (Special.)
The North Pacific Sea Product Com
pany took out a building permit in
Tacoma today for the construction of
a number of oil tanks for the storage
of whale oil. which will be brought
from the company' whaling stations
in Alaska. Whale meat will be sold
here also.
