ernment man-power resolution, which
abolishes exemptions under the mili
tary service act in the ages specified
and glvea the Minister of Militia power
to call men to the colors, aa necessity
demands, passed both houses last night,
being carried In the Commons by a
vole of 114 to 1.
The passage of the measure will be
followed by the Immediate calling to
the colors or all unmarried: men and
widowers, without children, between
the ages of 10 and ZZ years. Inclusive.
If enough men are not secured In this

To handle the IMS crops of Oregon,
including hay, grain, fruits and berries,
everyone must helu. The shortage of
farm labor Is said to be acute. The
United States Boys Working Reserve,
it Is expected, will prove a big factor
In relieving the situation, for several
thousand boys who are now enlisted
will be available,
Thla year there will be needed In the
vicinity of Salem about 1000 loganberry
pickers. Other parts of the Willamette
Valley will take as many more. From
1100 to 1500 strawberry pickers will be
needed at Hood River and about 00
cherry pickers will be needed at The
Dalles and vicinity.
I'p to the present time the Federal
Labor Bureau. 147 Davis street, has
been able to aupply about 75 per cent
of all calls for farm help.
The wage In the wheat-growing dis
trict Is 160 a month and board, and
higher salaries are paid elsewhere.
RAILROAD SAVING BEGINS
Schedule of Six Trains Dally to Fa
cet Sound Recommended.
Traffic and operating officials of the
Northwest railroads will meet again
at Seattle tomorrow. It Is expected
passenger train service between Port
land and Puget Sound will be simpli
fied by a schedule of six trains daily.
This has been recommended and awaits
only the sanction of Regional Director
Alshton. It la proposed that all trains
be run on a seven-hour schedule and
that tickets be Interchangeable. J

WASHINGTON. April 10. As the
Nation tonight completed half of Its
four weeks' liberty loan campaign
with subscription uf 11,371,035,300, or
a little less than half the 13,000,000,000
minimum total reported to the Treas
ury, cable dispatches brought word
that Germany's eighth popular war
loan was just dosing with J3,461,000,
000 subscriptions.
Tonight's Treasury figures brought
the total of the American people's con
tributions to war loans, including the
first and' second liberty loans In one
year of war up to $7,179,000,000.
With the addition of the eighth loan,
Germany has raised from her people
in a little more than .hree and one
half years of war about $20,800,000,000.
In the 12 working days remaining
In the third liberty loan campaign,
$1,629,000,000 must be raised to pass
the $3,000,000,000 mark, and this will
require a harvest of $135,000,000 sub-
scriptlons a day.
