He left Portland In a Chalmers speedster at 1 o'clock Sunday mornins; and reached Tacoma. which Is about IS miles beyond American Lake, at 4 o'clock that same afternoon. Next morning; he drove back to American Lake, and after a brief stay there, at 11 o'clock started back to Portland. He arrived here at 7 o'clock that night, only eight hours out from American Lake. How great has been the improve ment In business conditions generally in Oregon in the past year is Illus trated by figures given by George W. Dean, manager of the Howard Auto mobile Company's branch in Portland, showing the big Increase In sales of Bulck cars this March and March of l17. In March a year ago the Howard Au tomobile Company sold 84 cars in the state. When Mr. Dean got his report a few days ago for business done this March it showed a total of 244 Buicks sold in the state, an Increase of 160 cars, or nearly 150 per cent. This March 45 Bulck cars were sold In Portland alone, compared to 17 last March. And automobile sales are a first-class Index of business conditions. The largest increase in business shown by any automobile concern in the country during 1917 was reported by the Franklin Automobile Company at the annual meeting of the stock holders recently at Syracuse. The average gain in production of all makes of automobiles during the past year over 1918 was 12 per cent, while the output of Franklin cara was in creased to the extent of 135 per cent by the manufacture of 9000 cara, as against 3800 of the year previous.
