Philadelphia Due to cara not arriving,
many of which have been on the road two
weeks or more, there has been a short sup
ply of all meats to help meet the demand.
Frosen meats of all kinds were taken frora
the freexer.
- Washington The congssted condition of
the railroads and the severe weather have
caused many cars to be badly delayed: sev
eral cars are still long overdue. Receipts
of all kinds of meats were exceedingly
light. Several houses were without supplies
tha most of tna time. Prices have advanced
from fl to 3 on practically everything.
Market Closing.
Boston Most houses are making but lit
tle effort to clean up today on beef and
lambs and Indications are that the carry
over of both will be heavy. A number of
cars lntsnded for this week's business did not
arrlva in time to be placed on sale. The mar
ket on both beet and lamb la In an un
healthy condition. ' Veal is cleaning up In
good shape, pork prices have been shaded
by practically all houses, but the carryover
will bs rather heavy.
New York A number of cars arrived too
late to be placed for unloading for this
week's market. Beef Is going out fairly
steady with a lttle weakness showing on
some of the better grades. The market la
cleaning up nicely at fairly steady prices,
but on account of being frosen in transit
some weakness Is shown today on the clean
up. Lambs are cleaning- up good except tor
the light heavyweights.
Philadelphia The market this wees is

CORN MOVEMENT STILL BACKWARD
With Limited Arrivals, Prices Advance)
fcleadliy at Chicago.
CHICAGO. Jan. 20. Corn has risen In
due this week, forced upward largely by
the fact t.iat tha crop movement, although
Improved, did not become as brisk as a
majority of traders had looked for. Com
pared with a week ago. the market this
morning was hi to He higher. Oata showed
gains of H to 2 HO 2 He. The result in pro
visions varied from 47o decline to a rise -of
87e.
Despite evidence of material progress rn
clearing up railroad congestion, hope of
liberal arrivals of corn gave way to disap
pointment after Monday and Tuesday. Se
vere Winter conditions curbed the activities
of the railroads, fresh complaint of car
acarclty" developed and ther wer reports
that great quantities ot sort corn appeared
likely not to reach terminals In time to
be saved. Gradual tightening of tha market
led to an order for complete stoppage of
trade In tha jsnuary delivery and for set
tlements Instead at the maximum price
limit, 81.29 a bushel. Peace talk eountod
only at Intervals as a bearish factor. '
Liberal sales to the seaboard, together
with mesgerness of supplies, lifted oats
above all previous high-price records this
season.
Bl? supplies of hogs mads provisions aver
age lower. Eastern shipping difficulties op
erated also against any general strength
ening of values

FUEL RESTRICTION MARKET FACTOR
Railroad Bill Regarded More Favorably
Than First Plan Proposed.
NEW YORK, Jan. 26. The financial com
munity this week continued to adjust Itself
to the stringent conditions created by tha
Government's fuel regulations.
Another Important market factor was the
speech of the German Chancellor In respect
to peace torma. Foreign news suggesting
divergency In the peace views of the Aus
trian and German governments also was a
factor. Considerable attention was devoted
to the railroad bill urged upon Congress by
the Secretary of the Treasury as a prelimi
nary to the flotation of a 810.000.000.000 loan
before tha end of the fiscal year. In detail
the proposed legislation seems far more ad
vantageous to the railroads than the original
outline indicated.
Opposition to Government ownership of
the transportation companies, as voiced by
Secretary MrAdoo, and the need of estab
lishing a $500,000,000 fund to provide work
ing capital. Imparted new and more favor
able aspect to th railroad situation,
strengthening those securities .
Little improvement was reported In the
Industrial situation.
Keen Interest was manifested In next
Tuesday's meeting of th United States Steel
directors Action on the common dividend
for the last quarter of 1917 will then be
taken and earnings for that period, rounding
out the year, will be published.
Call money was easier and In mor abun
dant supply than at any time since the
flurry of last month, but time funds are ex
pected to remain scarce pending announce
ment of the terms of the next liberty loan.
