Latrobe was a really great American,
aa lawyer, statesman and architect.
He was born in Philadelphia May 4,
1S0S. where he lived until 1810. He
lived In Washington. D. C. until 1813;
in Pittsburg until 1815; again In Wash
ington, D. C, until 1S17, and In West
Point from 1818'to 1821.. In Baltimore
he was particularly well known.
Mr. Latrobe was the man who wrote
the address to be delivered at the lay
ing of the corner-stone of the Balti
more & Ohio Railroad, and who was
its general counsel from Its birth until
his death. In 1881. He waa the honor
man of his class at West Point, and
became one of tha great lawyers of
his time, being associated with Web
ster. Wirt & Taney. His position In
his profession Is evidenced by the fee
paid to him by Walter Winans 60 years
ago to go to Bt. Petersburg, Russia,
In an advisory capacity. This fee was
850.000, an enormous legal fee in those
days. Latrobe managed the great re
ception to Lafayette in 1824.
