PEACE TALK STILL PARAMOUNT ISSTTE
Money Is Easier in WaU Street Than at
Any Time for six weeks.
NEW YORK, Jan. 5. The week in the
Stock Market was attended by developments
of unusual interest and importance 10 in
vestors as well as the speculative com
munity. .
Declaration by President Wilson of the
,-ih of oanltal to reasonable compensation
aud the indicated readiness of Congress to-
act on the recommendations 01 me execu
tive contributed measureably to the further
manifestations of confidence.
That peace talk still remains the para
mount isniie was evidenced, however, by the
sharp reversal In prices on Turkey's over
tures and tne laiesi uiiwaiitw,
British Premier.
Money on time and call money was easier
than at any other period in tne past si
weeks, but new-financing is likely to hold
back until the further requirements of the
Government assume more concrete form.
Apart from slight heaviness in rates on
nomo tha forelirn exchange markets were
almost featureless on nominal offerings.
Bale by the American leiepiiono v..i-
pany of $40,000,000. 6 per cent, one-year,
notes waa noteworthy, because this issue

vttot YORK. Jan. 5. The actual condi
tion of clearing-house banks and trust com

they hold $61,270,520 reserve in excess of

a whole c off to o up, compared
with 24 hours before. Oats closed at o
uecnna to ftc advance. Provisions gained
5 to 15o net.
Consignment notices from rural holders of
corn allowed a material Increase and there
were reports current indicating substantial
betterment of railroad traffic conditions,
notably in Iowa aud Illinois. For the first
time this season an Illinois point announced
a surplus of cars. Besides, weather favored
shippers.
Rumors that a virtual embargo would be
plp.ced on all shipments of grain east nulli
fied advances In the 'oats market. Tempo
rarily commission-house buying had lifted
prices to a new high price record for the
season.
