THE SUNDAY OEEGONIAN, PORTLAND, DECE3IBER 33, 1917. POLICE THINK THEY DYNAMITERS 30 Suspects, Several I. W. W. Men, Arrested by Sacra mento Authorities. EXPLOSIVES FOUND IN BOX Officials Believe Attempt to Destroy Governor's Mansion Monday Was to Have Been Followed by T Otlier Demonstrations. BACRAMfiNTO. Cal., Dec. 22. Thirty men were arrested here tonight sus pected by the police of being impli cated in the explosion Monday night at the executive mansion here. The arrests followed the discovery of what Chief of Police Ira Conran said he be lieved was a plot to dynamite the elec tric power-house or the Racine ,as ec Electric Company here tonight. The dynamiting of the executive mansion late Monday night was only the beginning of a series of explosions here, according to a remark alleged to have been made by one of the pris oners. None of the men tinder arrest has made a formal statement. Two Men Cmrrr Dynnmtte. Two of the men were carrying a box In which was concealed ten sticks of 6 per cent dynamite, according to the police, when they were taken Into custody. It had been just delivered to them at the Wells-Fargo Express of fice here, the police said. They gave their names as William Hood and O. F. Voetter when they were arrested by Chief Conran, Captain of Detectives Arthur Ryan and Detective Richards. The officers had been fol lowing the men In an automobile. The dynamite was covered with cakes of soap. Hood, Chief Conran said. Is wanted by the Federal authorities In Chicago In connection with an explosion there some time ago. The police said Hood was arrested here about a year ago under the name of Doherty on a petty larceny charge. Explosion "Only BeKUnlac." The 28 other men were arrested In a raid on the local headquarters of the Industrial Workers of the World where, according to the police. Hood has been staying several days. Chief Conran said the police had in formation that Hood was alleged to have remarked that the "dynamiting of the Governor's mansion was only the beginning of a series of explosions "that would occur in Sacramento." A quantity of L W. W. literature, maps, photographs, and drawings were taken from some of the men under ar rest. Chief Conran said. The box con taining the dynamite was addressed to "George Messingham" and was shipped from Smart, Cal., a small station on the Southern Pacific Railroad, near the Lake Spaulding dam of the Pacific Gas c Electric Company. The police believe a search of the vicinity may reveal a "dynamite cache." Among the men arrested was Charles W. KoenJgr. who was taken Into cus tody the day f ollo-wlmg- the explosion at the executive mansion and released later. James Mulroney, who. It had been announced, was to speak tonight on the labor situation in Butte, Mont, also was among those held by the police. Three other men who appeared, to night at the headquarters were sent to the police station for investigation They were taken into custody by the policemen on guard there. along the line will result. Many stores will send out great quantities of Christmas gifts toaay, as well as to morrow and Tuesday. The Christmas markets remain prac tically unchanged as to prices, except for turkeys, always an Important item in the holiday menu. The top of the turkey market yesterday brought 38 cents per pound, dressed, a somewhat fancier quotation than had been antici pated, but the lift in price is accribed to floods that delayed trains and pre vented the delivery in Portland of turkeys prepared for the Christmas market. On this account, the whole sale price advanced to 32 cents. It is expected that large shipments of birds will come in tomorrow and It may be that the quotations will drop somewhat as the result.
