20 THE SUNDAY OKEGONIAN, PORTLAND, "DKCEMTTETE . 23. 1M7. RAIL HDAD RUMDRS GO THICK AND FAST Eastern Lines Not Looking for Business and Representar. tives May Be Called In. DEFINITE ACTION DESIRED Circuitous I touting of Supplies For bidden, So Maintenance of West ern Offices Is Regarded as Unnecessary Expense. Rumors are flying fast alone Rail road Row. Every day or two for the past fortnight has brought some va riation of the report that foreign lines ere to close their offices here and call their representatives in this territory to the aid of the headquarters offices. War conditions are believed to sup ply substantial foundation for the rumors, but up to now they lack any sort of confirmation. One day it is wafted to the ears of denizens of the row that the Erie has closed its San Krancisco offices, and this is regarded as the entering wedge, with dire re sults to the local railroad colony. Yesterday it came to the ears of Portlanders interested in transporta tion lines that the Pennsylvania had closed its offices in Salt Lake City, and that the Wabash and Baltimore & Ohio had done likewise. The Pennsylvania, which has Just is sued an appeal to the public not to travel on its lines during the holiday season, something never before known in the history of railroading in this country at least. Is also reported every little while to be about to close its offices in the West. John S. Campbell, district agent here, recently went back to headquarters to see if there is any thing to this statement. Expenses Kept Dona. Many Eastern lines have advised their representatives here not to so licit business and to incur no expense along that line until notice is received. Many lines in the East are swamped with business already, while their staffs, both operating and office, are being depleted by the call to war. The glut of traffic is outrunning equipment supply and to ask for more business at this end would be foolhardy under present conditions. Tie National Council of Defense has Issued an edict that circuitous routing must be avoided and direct routing is urged in order to save motive power. So Eastern lines with representatives here whose rails do not follow the most direct line can profit nothing by solic iting business in this territory If the orders of the Council are followed. The New York Central lines have issued an order to the effect that the company's crack train, the Twentieth Century Limited, will be run hereafter in one section, making a saving , in equipment in this way. Administrators Are Criticised. The present condition" of the rail roads is said to be almost pitiable, due largely to the fact there has not been the co-operation between the various systems that the country expected and for the further reason that food admin istrators and others in authority have played ducks and drakes by ordering equipment about regardless, resulting in worse traffic blockades than ever. It is expected that when Congress meets again after the holidays some thing tangible will come out of the flock of rumors, that the President will take steps to get more efficiency out of the railroad, poseibly by com bining them under one head, and that it will be known shortly wtoat to expect. Dissolution of the organizations built up by the intermediate and eastern lines throughout the country would mean a big problem later when nor mal conditions return to this country, It is a hard proposition for the rail roads to give up the competitive sys tern, which has developed the present ENGINEER WELL, KNOW5 ON LUIiUJISIA WHO WAS B CRIED FRIDAY. I ' VI '- Irtfr rinltfiiaroi Albert Jaeksoa. Albert Jackson, -whose funeral was held Friday at the Sell wood Crematorium, was an old time river engineer. He was born at Oregon City in 18S3. He moved to Portland In. early man hood. For the past 12 years he had been on the W. S. Mason, the Albina ferry. A month ago he complained of feeling tired and Monday, having gone to & store near his home, dropped dead on the Btreet corner returning. He leaves a widow, a son. in the serv ice at Fort Stevens and a daugh ter. In The Dalles and on thoTiver. for 40 years he was known as "Prince" Jackson. efficiency of the transportation lines of the country. . But present cxndi tlons are such that instead of the lines now trying- to get business they try to hand it to their" keenest rivals ia order to save themselves grief.
