THE SUNDAY OltEGONIAX, PORTLAND, -T)ECE3IBER 33, 1917. 15 GLASS DIVISIONS KEEPS BOARDS BUSY Tomorrow Is Last Day Affi davits May Be Filed Asking Deferred Classification. ADVISORY BOARDS WORKING ilacli NigUt Work Being Pons by Clerks and Board Members 3 Boards Increase Dally Ses sions to 1 2 Hours Each. Nearly all of the 11 exemption boards of Multnomah County spent some time yesterday on the classification of registrants whose Questionnaires have been received, bu- none, so far as known, mailed notices announcing to registrants the classes to which they were assigned. It was said that the mailing of such notices will be started quite generally tomorrow, when the seven days' time allowed relatives or employers for the filing of deferred classification claims elapses. The draft act provides that a wife or employer may, regardless of the classification the registrant asks for himself, file affidavits in an effort to have the man placed in one of the deferred classes. Separate Headquarters Established. Division board No. S left the gen eral headquarters in room 145, Court bouse, yesterday, following the example of boards Nos. 2 and 8, which had ought to relieve congestion and find urcease from distractions by estab lishing separate headquarters Friday. Board No. 8 is located in room 403 of the Corbett building. Board No. 8 made a second move yesterday, leaving the Oregon Humane Society office on the first floor of the Courthouse and pre empting the office of County Head master John B. Yeon, 60S Courthouse. In addition to the thinning out of the central army of clerks and board mem bers, relief was had by trie overworked toilers through the enlistment yester day of eight new volunteer helpers. These went on duty at the headquar ters counter, to assist in handling the stream of inquiring registrants. Dur ing the past three days much night work has been done by clerks and board members. Those who have toiled at the joint headquarters state that puzzled registrants have always ap . peared on the scene until the lights were put out and the workers went home. Advisory Boards Are Busy. Most of the advisory boards are now finding all the work they can do, they report. Some of these volunteer com mittees have been working overtime and nearly all of them have arranged shifts of advisors, with changes effect ive during the day. A few of the ad visory boards have announced only weekday hours, and will probably not be open today. The complete list, with the hours to be observed, was printed In The Oregonian last Sunday. Advisory boards Nos. 6, 6 and 8, meeting at 271 Pine street, Multnomah Hotel, will not be open Tuesday, Christ mas day. These three boards wil! in crease their working -bourL - to 13. each day, from 9 A, M. to 8 P. M. Seventh List mailed. Questionnaires - were mailed yester day, the seventh day of mailings, to vne names here listed; Division 1. Order Norn. 823 to 959. Merrill Police Think Man Held Without Bail Found Woman With Friend and in Fit of Rage Hit Her and Threw Body Out ot Window, Lucy Carter, concerning whose past little is known, leaped, fell or w thrown early yesterday morning from the window ot her room on the third floor of th Cadlllao Hotel, 888 H Third street. Her skull was fractured as she struck on the sidewalk below. She died, a few minutes later in an arabu lance on the way to a hospital. Information in the hands of Detec tive Captain Eaty convinces him that the Carter woman was murdered, and Frank Gaudo has been arrested and held for investigation. Captain Baty says the window was open only about wo feet from the bottom, so that it would be virtually impossible for any one to fall through it. Moreover, the detectives were told by other lodgers in the place that there were two men in the room with the woman ana that there; was a lively ouarrel. jealousy, In the belief of Captain Baty, figured in the trasredv. According to uaudo'a own statement made last night In detective headquar ters. the Carter woman fell on Jumped through the window while he was In the adjoining room. Suspect Telle Story. "We have been living there together for some time." he said, speaking through an interpreter. '"Last night she went out to do the last of her Christmas shopping, . while I stayed in the room. Some time after midnight she came home and Drought with her a man whom she introduced as Mr, An derson. I had never seen Anderson before. They brought a gallon of wine with them. "It must have been about 2 o'clock that the Janitor came and rapped on the door, and said we were making too much noise, I told Lucy and Anderson to make less noise, and they got angry about it. I refused to quarrel with them about it, and walke X into the kitchen, which is the. next room. ''After a while, I heard Anderson say. 'Well, good-night, I'll see you to morrow. "She said, "AH right. Don't bring anyone with you.' Gaudo Held Without Ball. "Then I heard the door open an shut and knew that Anderson had gone, so I went into the room wher they had been and looked for the gir She wasn t there, so 1 looked out the -hall. Then I looked under the bed By. and by I noticed that the window was open and looked out and saw he lying on the sidewalk. "I ran out the baek way and around in front to where she was lying. There were two motorcycle policemen ther then, I turned her over to see if sh -s dead and that is how I got this blood on my cults. When asked why he fled from th scene, Gaudo had no satisfactory answer to make. He said that all o them had been drinking a good deal. Detective Joe Morak met Gaudo yes terday at 6' o'clock on the Fourth-stree viaduct in South Portland and brought him to police headquarters. No traca has been found of the other man In the case. Tne Carter woman s body was re moved to the public morgue by Ed ward Smith, deputy coroner. 'Gaudo is held without bail. Division 11. Order Noa. 337 to 383. (Legal advisory board headquarters.
