Stella Recruit Dead. Telegraphic
information has Just been received by
relatives announcing the death at
T. nited States naval hospital at Ports
mouth of Harry Earl stark. Young
&tark was born at Laurel, Or., Feb
ruary 25. 1893, but since the are of
8 has resided at Stella, Wash. He came
to Portland and enlisted in the Navy
July 23, being stationed at Bremerton
until November 27, when he was trans
ferred to Virginia. Funeral services
will be held on Thursday, December 13,
at Stella.
Dr. Rebec to Speak Today. Dr.
George Rebec, professor of philosophy
of the University of Oregon, will give
the address at vesper services this
afternoon at the Reed' College chapel.
The programme will commence at 4
o'clock with the prelude "Andantino
Reverie," chosen from Dubois. Spe
cial music on the Olds Memorial organ
will consist of the "Elegie" and "Meditation-Thais,"

Seventt Reed Men in Service. A !
large service flag in honor of the men
who have enlisted from Reed College
will be presented to the college by the
Amanda Reed Association, including all
of the girls of the student body. This
was decided by the association at the
student body meeting on Thursday.
Seventy stars, to represent each man
enlisted, will be set in the blue field
of the flag and space left for 100 more.

William Burke and Family Return.
Mr. and Mrs. William Burke and
daughter, Blanche, have returned to
their home In Portland after a visit of
five weeks with relatives in Omaha,
Neb., and in Burley, Idaho. While in
Omaha they were the guests of Mr.
and Mrs. John A. McShane and while
in Burley they were the guests of their

ANNUAL CONCERT PLANNED
Choral Society of Reed College to
Give Programme December 19.
The annual Christmas concert will be
prestnted by the Choral Society of
Heed College in the college chapel, De
cember 19, at 8 o'clock. The first half
of the programme will consist of a
-wide selection of Christmas carols from
the musical lore of various nations,
presented in the native costumes.
The latter part of the concert will be
devoted to choruses selected from Han
del's "Messiah." During this part of
the nroKiamme the members will be
.ittlrea in long robes and carry candles,
appropriate to the spirit of the occa
sion. More than 40 members of the
Choral Society will participate In the
concert, while holly and candles will
give a holiday setting for the event.

Federal Official Declares Plana for
East Are Being Modeled
After Polk County.
OREGON NORMAL SCHOOL. Mon
mouth. Or., Dec. 8. (Special.) The ad
ministration office of the normal
school Is in- receipt of a communication
from E H. Burnham, of the United
States Bureau of Education. ' giving
praise for the school's department of
rural education, which Includes the
classroom work in the normal Itself,
and a system of rural schopls in South
Polk County. Mri Burnham declared
the system here is the most highly
rated of any covered in his visit from
Maine to Oregon.'
Particular mention was given to the
systematized methods of instruction In
the rural centers where student teach
ers go out at regular intervals with
lesson plans. A complete copy of the
plans which tbe Oregon Normal uses is
in Mr. Burnham's possession for use in
mbdeling a system of instruction for
schools in various states of the East.
The employment in Polk County, un
der competent direction, of so many
special studies and contests the spell
ing contest and the system of play
ground composition is highly com
mended by Mr. Burnham, who, after
visiting several hundred rural schools.

keynote of the state meeting of County
Agricultural Councils to be held in
Corvallis December 21 and January 1.
Food administration and price fixing
will be discussed by W. K. Newell,
acting Federal food administrator for
Oregon. J. W. Brewer, state labor spe
cialist for the United States Depart
ment of Agriculture, will give several
talks, and L. R. Simons, organization
specialist in county agent work for
the Government, is included In the
list of speakers. It is probable that
Bruce Dennis, director of the state
Council for Defense, will address the
meeting.

MOUNT ANGEL COLLEGE, St. Bene
dict, Or., Dec. 8. (Special.) An in
teresting and enjoyable play was given
by the elocution class Tuesday. The
play is one of the latest productions
by Seymour S. Tibbals, known as "Up
Caesar's Creek."
The object of the play is to portray
the life of real boys. The first act
shows them in a clubroom. The sec
ond finds them in camp . at Caesar's
Creek. In the third they are rehears
ing a future programme they are to
give for the benefit of the college
literary society.
The college orchestra furnished music
between the acts.
