TIIE SUNDAY OREGOXIAX. TORTLAXD, DECE3IBEE 0,-1917. TEUTONS DIG AMID RAIN OF MISSILES MAP ILLUSTRATING EBB AND FLOW ON WEST FRONT. Area Given Up by General Byng Is Reoccupied by Germans. TASK MOST DIFFICULT ONE Bourlon Wood Still Recks With Poisonous Gas and Low-Lying Regions Nearby Arc Xow , Waste of Ruins. CBy the Associated Prewa. BRITISH HEADQUARTERS IN FRANCE. Dec. 7. The Germans today continued reoccupylng the devastated area bequeathed to them by the Brit ish when General Byng made his with drawal from the Cambrai salient. It was an unsavory task that faced the enemy. The Bourlon wood still was reeking with poisonous gas, Grain- court, Anneux, Captains, Noyelles, Mar- coins and Masnieres were a waste of ruins, and the - low-lying ground on which the Germans apparently had planned to dig their new trenches were overlooked1 by the British positions. Into , this desert the big guns were hurling- tons of explosives and machine Frunners were whipping a constant steram of bullets Into the ranks of the enemy sent forward to prospect for desirable points available for defense. Meanwhile the major portion of the British army was sitting comfortably In their new home In what was for merly the famous Hindenburg trenches. The wonderful German dugouts and network of front-line and communica tion trenches were all at the disposal of the Tommies, who looked out with unconcerned satisfaction at the former occupants, now laboring miserably to build underground habitations. Patrol Clashes Continue. . Fighting continued today at many points between advanced patrols of the .British and Germans. In the region of La Vacquerie, the Germans gave no indication that they had abandoned their attempt to oust the British from the high ground just north of La ..vacouene village. It Is Impossible, of course, to give n adequate estimate of the number of German troops employed in these operations, but It Is probably not far out of the way to say that the enemy bad something like 250,000 men. Maijy recently had been brought from other fronts. The withdrawal leaves the British In full possession of the Hindenburg line Between the Nord Canal and Villers Ploulch. East of Villers-Plouich the British line crosses the system and then southwest -toward Gauche wood, which the British still hold. The new positions are exceedingly strong, and the Germans are giving Indications that they intend to dig themselves In along the line a respectful distance Xrom it. BRITISH ARMY HEADQUARTERS IN FRANCE, Dec. 7. (By the Associ ated Press.) Distinct satisfaction was elt. along the British front today at tne success of the retirement in the court jkSSiSSypBitr,' 8e,A''r'sei - Fon 'I Jf.ggX.J Vujjr .rnn I Vmizay&ilMgr Htt I.lne In Center of Map Marks B rlttsa Posttlona Before Taelr Late Drive Began. The world will never know the full story of the heroism dis played by General Byngs men In hold ing Bourlon Wood, fighting and work ing day and night in gas helmets. Nat urally the reliefs were frequent, but even under these conditions it was ex ceedingly trying to work with the face enclosed in the airtight head piece, probably having about the same effect as a diver's helmet. The men went about their work peering through eye pieces and taking commands by signals. As long as the British artillery Is able to continue the heavy bombard ment of Bourlon Wood, such as Is now being carried on. It Is probable the wood will not be free from reeking and poisonous fumes. Germana Losing; Heavily The Germans have been losing heavi ly in 'men ever since they started to follow the British retirement. They are now suffering what the British might have suffered had the Germans discovered that the retirement was Im pending and launched an attack at an opportune time. The British rear guards were withdrawn In sections, leaving the enemy puzzled as. to the exact situation, and the constant artil lery and rifle fire of the . British, to gether with their patrol assaults, con fused the enemy. Every British gun and "every piece 6f ammunition was removed safely. After the main body of troops had been withdrawn a few hardy Tommies who had been left behind blew ud the bridges over the Nord Canal. These explosions, at about-daylight Wednes day, gave the Germans their first Inti mation that something unusual was aroot. German air scouts have been work lng overtitme at reconnaisance and the British airmen are unceasingly active. Halsey Oddfellows Plan, Hunt. HALSEY, Or., Dec. 8. (Special.)
