Erie Railroad mechanical department.
The car. although It has not as yet
been turned over to the Government, is
, being held In readiness for Uncle Sam's
soldiers.

German air raids over London have
claimed the lives of many babies In
arms. Every conceivable sort of cave,
.jindergrround passageways and concrete
dwellings are utilised to protect babes
from the ruthless air raiders. The
Germans, knowing their raids kill
babies and women, still persist, al
though there Is no "military advan
tage" possible.
British kiddies made homeless by the
German air raiders over London are
fed In the streets by the Salvation
Army. These kiddles, most of them
ranging from 2 to 5 years, are the
enemies of Germany who are suffering
most. together with the women,
through the German air raids over
London. v

Air raids have become so customary
In -England, especially London, and
London families are so often seeking
shelter In., dugouts that are safe from
the bombs of the German airmen, that
they are. seeking means to while away
the tedium waiting for the air raiders
to pass. . Some take a phonograph
along, possibly to play the very appro
priate tune of "Get Out and Get
Under."

The first concrete freighter built, in
" Canada was launched on November 14
at Montreal. The world-wide scarcity
of shipping. has made the utilization of
concrete ships a necessity. Concrete
has many advantages as a shipbuilding
material, especially in the matter of
standardization, for once the design has
been. made many ships can be rapidly
turned out. The concrete vessel re
lieves the great stress of shipping of
all kinds if they will be turned out in
the numbers expected. The vessel is
capable of trans-oceanic service and
will offer a firm resistance to " sub
marine warfare.

Big British hydro-aeroplanes are car
ried on board ships and when hostile
filers approach they are launched and
used to chase the enemies- away. The
airships are launched and raised to the
ships' decks by means of pulleys.

The Norton-Harjes ambulance unit
was one of the first American contin
gents to see service In France. It has
Just been taken over by Jhe American
Army under General Pershing.
The unit performed heroic work in
aiding the wounded and so many of Its
members were awarded the Croix de
Guerre for their bravery that the con
tingent became noted for the number
of Us men Vho had been decorated.
On the entrance of the United States
Into the war several of the men joined
other branches of our service.

The big British tank that did so
much to Inspire interest In the second
liberty loan In New. York, and the
armored cars of one of the New York
batteries have left New York on a new
and great mission "somewhere else."
The tank and the armored cars took
part. In the great liberty loan parade.
After the parade the tank was placed
beside the German UC-5. the captured
submarine which was used as a liberty
loan booth In Central Park.
