10. British troops In their attack on the
Passchendaele region, on the Flanders
front, today, reached an extreme depth
of 800 yards on a 2500-yard front. They
not only attained their objectives, but
some of their troops have even gone be
yond them to the north along Passchen
daele ridge.
The British passed many strongly
fortified farms north and northwest of
Uoeberg. At this point they were fight
lng nearly half a mile from their
jumpint-oit place.
The line was pushed northward along
the Passchendaele ridge almost to the
point at which the highest crest starts
eloping downward. Today's operations
were carried ou. on a 2500-yard front
for limited objectives, which had been
virtually all gained by 10 o'clock.
The attack was begun at 6:05 and in
the rain which had been falling nearlv
all night. The ground along the crest
ol the ridge was in comparatively good
condition for the advance, but to the
westward, in the valley of Paddebeek,
It was exceedingly marshy.
Despite the vile going on the lower
ground, the troops here appear to have
kept up with the progress of the more
fortunate men on the higher ground.

continuing the liberty loan financing
between periods of intensive cam
paigns, through disposal of bonds by
tanks and other large purchasers to
individuals who have not already sub
scribed to the extent of their ability

of Newton R. Head, seaman, who was
drowned, was picked up by the patrol
boat Alcedo, afterwards torpedoed and
lost. The other two .seamen lost were
James W. Henry and Porter Hilton.

(Special.) A wreck occurred on the
Silver Lake logging road when a train
coming down the line a short distance
above town struck a tree which had
fallen across the track during a wind
storm that afternoon and was ditched.
The engine was pushing six carsof
ogs ahead, with one car of shingles in
the rear. The engineer could not see
the obstruction, owing to the loaded
cars ahead, and the first he knew of
the trouble was when he saw the
brakeman Jump from the train. There
was a sharp curve and down grade and
the train bumped into the tree before
the brakes could be set. The tree was
about three and one-half feet In diame
ter. No one was hurt. The wrecking
outfit had the track, cleared in less
than 12 hours.

Thirty-Seventh Annual Convention
Begins Tomorrow.
BUFFALO, N. T., Nov. 10. The ex
ecutive council of the American Fed
eration of Labor met today to take
final action on the annual report to
be submitted to the delegates attend-
ng the . 37th annual convention here
Monday.
Governor Charles S. Whitman will
speak at the opening session.
At a meeting of the building trades
department the application of the In
ternational Boilermakers' and Ship
builders' Union to be affiliated with
the building trades department was re-
ected. It was held that it would not
be in accord with the department's
constitution to admit a union not uni
versally employed in building construc
tion.

Senator Humbert, enclosing receipts
for the money, asked the committee
to approve the suspension of immunity.
Fernand Monier. president of the
Paris Court of Appeals, for misuse of
his office, has been condemned to dis
missal. Monier was a friend of Bolo
Pasha.
