liberty day, next Wednesday, will be
observed in appropriate fashion by
Portland schools. There will; be pa
triotic music, flag1 salutes and pledges
by the children and short talks by an
assigned list of speakers who will give
patriotic addresses. The meaning of
investment in the liberty loan will be
explained.
.David N". Mosessohn, chairman of the
committee in charge, has issued a let
ter of instructions to speakers, and a
letter has gone from Superintendent
Alderman to the various principals
"who are arranging for the exercises.

Central Committee Is Appointed to
Make Caifvass of County.

Estimates piven out by the banks here
place Baker's subscription to the llbery
loan at $200,000. Half the amount has
ben pledged. This includes applica
tions made at four rural banks.
The liberty loan committee met this
afterr.oon and appointed a central com
mittee, consisting of T. G. Montgomery,
of the Kirst National Bank; B. K. Hard
er, of the Citizens Xational Bank, and
H. A. Sonne, of the Baker Loan &
Trust Bank. This committee will take
charge of the soliciting' campaign in
Baker and throughout the county.
Successful meetings were held to
night at Pocahontas and McEwen.

DUFL'R, Or., Oct. 20. (Special.) At
a. meeting of the Farmers' Union held
here today libert y bonds were pur
chased in the amount of $20,7 fiO. Mrs.
L. J. Klinger took $2000 worth of the
bonds.
J. XV. McCulloch, of Ontario, ex
plained the bonds, while F. A. Freeman,
of Portland, told the farmers why they
should aid the Government. During
the meeting Johnson, Bros., bankers,
;sa id they would loan money at 4 per
cent interest to persons wishing" to buy
bonds.
Dufur has already raised about
$3(1,000.
PATRIOTIC RALLY AT BAXDOX
"Whirlwind Liberty Bond Campaign
Arranged for Next Week.
BAXDOX, Or.. Oct. 20. (Special.)
The liberty bond subscriptions reported
at the close of banking hoiys tonight
totaled $11,7."0. Local committees will
next week make a whirlwind campaign
through the country districts, meetings
having been arranged for local speak
ers in all the rural schools.
Wed n e sd a y will be o bserved as a
holiday and all business will be sus
pended. A big patriotic meeting will
be hold in the theater, with Walter
II. Evans, of Portland, as the speaker.
School Teachers to Buy Bonds.
TAt'OM A. Wash., Oct. 20. (Special.)
Taconia school teachers will sub
scribe to the liberty loan. They have
been uiven an opportunity by the Board
of Kducation to take the securities and
pay for them on time. Employes of
the Clear Kir Lumber Company have
su bscribed approximately $20,000 for
the bonds and soldiers at Camp Lewis
liave paid close to $600,000.

"This subscription is our answer, for
the present, to the sinking of the
An ti lies," was the message which ac
companied a liberty loan subscription
of $1,600,000 by the Rank of California.
San Francisco's total is $33,1S5,S00.
Howard M. Payne, receiver in the
Federal oil land suits in California,
subscribed $2,:00,000.
More than 4 00.000 people have thus
far subscribed in Xew England for the
second liberty loan issue.
Lynn Murkey, principal of Easton
School, was fined $50 in Justice Court
at Kllenslmrg, Wash., upon conviction
of using language calculated to pro
voke an assault in connection with a
verbal attack he was alleged to have
made in the County Teachers' Institute
upon a speaker asking support for the
liberty loan.
Montana. 27 out of 43 counties, has
subscribed $7,03 7,4 5 0.
Louisville. Ky., has oversubscribed Its
minimum quota 33 per cent. Subscrip
tions reported total $10,316,300.
Tucson and I'ima counties, Arizona,
with a population of 30,000, have over
subscribed their allotment of $600,000
in liberty bonds after a four days' cam
paign and expect to take double the
allotment before the campaign is
closed.
Idaho has raised a trifle more than
53.000.000. or about one-third of its
quota of $9,000,000. One hundred thou
sand dollars is appropriated by the
State LaniWBoard from the permanent
school funds.

Merle Gibson Sends Letter Saying
That V-Iioat Went Down.

Merle Gibson, of Eusrene, son of Mrs.
C. Sherman, in "a letter received by
his mother states that he witnessed the
destruction of a German submarine by
American gunners, while on hie way to
France.
Gibson states that the U-boat at
tacked the vessels carrying his detach
ment and was destroyed by the con
voys. John Gibson, another son of Mrs.
Sherman, with General Pershing in
France, writes that the climate is very
similar to that of the Willamette Valley.
Helen Fay Dies In Ohio.
EUGENE., Or., Oct. 20.r-(SpeciaI.)
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Fay, of this city,
today received a telegram announcing
the death of their daughter, Helen Fay,
who had been visiting friends in Ohio.
Miss Fay was a member of the 'fresh
man clans at the University of Oregon
last yar.
