THE SUNDAY OREGONIAX, PORTLAND, OCTOBER 14, 1917. DPllV E HALF OVER, RESULT IS SILL Manager Miller Is Hopeful, but Urges Workers to Put Forth Greater Effort. NAMES OF SOME BUYERS OF NEW ISSUE OF LIBERTY LOAN BONDS ARE MADE PUBLIC IDLE ONES TO BE ROUSED fom Now on Every Effort Will Be Made to Interest All Citizens in the Success of Great ' Liberty Loan. ' (Continued From First ragr.) eight, but not yet officially reported, that will swell the total subscriptions to a big extent, but these are by no means enough to assure the ilesired total. The United States National Bank will sign up for $500,000, the School Hoard will take bonds to the amount of $302,000, and the Port of Portland will subscribe $600,000. Manager Miller leaves the city to morrow night for a five-day tour of Kastern Orearon, to put more zip into the campaign. He says he will not only talk with the bankers in the lead ing cities, but will go out in person and urge individuals to subscribe where time and opportunity permits. Speakers io Out Tomorrow. Tomorrow Patriotic week starts and It is desired to make the event truly effective in the distribution of liberty MAYOR PROCLAIMS PATRIOT IC WEEK OCTOIIKR 1.1-aO. Appropriate services in churches today will inaugurate Patriotic week, proclaimed by Governor Withycombe. During these seven days it is desired that thoughts of all Oregon people shall turn to the needs of the Government, particularly in respect to the lib erty loan. Mayor Baker yesterday issued the following proclama tion : "The Governor of Oregon has designated the week beginning Monday, October 15, as Patriotic week. The women's liberty loan committee, co-operating with a similar organization of men, will, during the week, force a big drive in behalf of the second lib erty loan of 1917. Realizing the tremendous importance of the is sues and dangers confronting us, the welfare and safety of our boys at the front, the welfare and safety of our Nation at home, and the need of Oregon maintain ing its past wonderful record of "first in time of war," I hereby proclaim: "That Monday, the beginning day of Patriotic week, shall be made a momentous occasion: "That, for the purpose of focus ing attention upon the serious ness of the struggle of democracy against Kaiserism, all streetcars shall stop for one minute at 12:15 noon. "That all whistles in the city shall blow, that all bells shall ring, that all automobile horns shall be honked and that the Stars and Stripes shall wave everywhere on buildings and homes. "That the thoughts of our cit izens shall be concentrated on the vital issues we face. "That every citizen able to do so shall pledge himself at that moment to invest in a liberty bond of this, the second issue of 1917. "GEO. L. BAKER, Mayor." toonds. Speakers will start out to spread the gospel of the liberty loan throughout the state and enthusiasm is certain to be aroused through these meetings. Today the liberty loan appeal will be given from pulpits throughout the state. Clergymen will bespeak su port for it. Mayor Baker and R. W. Montague will speak this afternoon at McMinnville. The regular speaking tour opens tomorrow. Tom Roberts, oi the firm of Roberts Brothers, has con tributed expenses of Jerry Bronaugh and II. If. Ward, on a speaking tour of Marion County. Restaurant men at a meeting yester day afternoon at the Hazelwood decided to start out Monday and visit every res taurant, asking subscriptions both from the managements of the various eating bouses direct and from their employes. They will also arrange for stickers on menus and other publicity methods. The men will work in eight- squads of two each; Manager Miller addressed them yesterday and advised an ener getic campaign. Roseburg Is Backward. Roseburg is one dark spot on the lib erty loan map. because of no organiza tion. B. L. Eddy has been appealed to by Manager Miller to form an efficient -working organization there. Lack of co-operation . has proved fatal to the purposes of the loan so far as Roseburg is concerned up to this time, and it is urged that Roseburg people get into line at the earliest possible moment. The state committee does not believe that Roseburg is not patriotic. Mr. Eddy will endeavor to bring the banks there together in the .common cause. "Women of the state are working for the bonds. At a meeting of the Wom en's Liberty Loan Committee yesterday afternoon at headquarters, 408 Piatt building, tentative plans were made for bonfires on October 23. This plan will be used all over the country to call attention to the fact that October 27 closes the bond-buying period. Where the local bonfire will be held is not yet determined, nor who will light it. At Washington Mrs. W. G. McAdoo will perform that ceremony. Women Are Interested. Women members of the committee also want all women to buy bonds and also to be sure to sign special blanks provided for women subscribers, so that it will be known when the bond sale is over just how big a proportion of the money was raised by women. Banks are provided with special blanks, bearing a blue corner, for women bond buyers. It is asked by the committee that women who will take bonds come to the committee headquarters and sign sDDlications there. Campaign headquarters last night was gladdened by the appearance there of N. A. Stamoulis, chairman ot a com Tnlttee at work among local Greeks. He brought in subscriptions totaling $10,000. The Portland Ad Club made known its subscription yesterday for one $50 bond. The Portland Press Club has subscribed for bonds to the amount of $300. During the coming week special ef forts will be made to popularize the bonds. Teams of students from every high school in the city will conduct a house-to-house canvass, and Boy Scouts FOLLOWING is the list of Portland residents and business concerns whose subscriptions have been an nounced to date from liberty loan head quarters. The list is admittedly incom plete, owing to the fact that many re quests were made that the names of Subscribers he not mnria nnhli. "V.i- I terday's subscriptions are not included: Atvln W.
