ASTORIA, Or., Sept. 1. (Special)
The entertainment events of the sec
ond day of the Astoria annual regatta
closed this evening with a display of
fireworks on the waterfront In which a
number of patriotic pieces were set off.
The social feature of the evening was
a grand ball held at the Elks Temple
by the local chapter of the Red Cross
Society. The affair was purely of a
patriotic nature and the proceeds,
which will total a goodly sum, will be
devoted entirely to Red Cross work.
The first event on this morning's pro
gramma was a balloon ascension and
parachute Jump by Frank Miller, who
when fully 200 feet in the air liberated
eeveral turkeys, which were the prizes
of those who captured the birds when
they reached the ground.
Immediately afterwards boat races
were called but owing to the dense
smoke from forest fires in the interior
that covered the river, there were but
few entries and only one race was
run, the others being postponed until
Monday. This was a contest between
power fish boats, a distance of three
miles around the triangular course off
the city front. It was won by Ole
Westerberg with O. Johanson second
and J. P. Jensen third.
A party of 17 swimmers and divers
from Portland gave an Interesting ex
hibition of fancy diving and swim
ming stunts this afternoon.
The men's swimming race, a distance
of 220 yards, was won by O. G. Hosford,
with Lock Webster second and William
Bmlth third.
In the women's swimming race over
100-yard course, Irene Penbrook was
the winner, Thelma Payne being sec
ond and Mrs. Constance Meyer third.
On Sunday the visitors will go to
the beaches, where several special en
tertainment features will be staged.

Hockey Game to Be Flayed Again,
but What Teams Will Constitute
League Is Not Decided.
Portland is going to have Ice skating
again, and hockey, too.
Further than that there is nothing
sure about- the season's sport in Port
land. War has not shot the plans of
the Northern professional hockey team
owners full of holes. E. J. Bryan, now
In control of the Portland Ice Palace, is
not in a position to say what kind of
a schedule or league it will be, but he
is going to stick with the hockey game
and the sport of skating until some
thing "busts."
Hockey plans are somewhat of a puz
Eler. Bryan does not know just what
the plans of the Patrick brothers are up
Morth, and, of course, the organization
of .the league as it was in the past
depends on what these men will do.
Another factor Is Spokane. This team
was brought Into the league last year,
but for some reason It did not pull
well, though the transplanted Victo
rians played a good fast game and
a. mighty good brand of play occurred
every time they had a brush over there.
Mr. Bryan said last night that the
kiddies of Portland are going to get
every chance to learn the game and
play it all the time.
The prices for skating will be re
fiuced to a point where it will be merely
nominal for children. Also grown-ups
will be able to play the game oftener,

JRACTOR DRIVER HURT
Jj. Koslses Injured When Machine
Crashes Through Tramway.
Lewis Koslses, 38 years old, was
taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital
at 12:15 yesterday, suffering from in
juries received when a tractor which
he was driving crashed through a
tramway at linnton. Koslses is se
verely bruised about the hips and legs.
The machine was not injured.
E. Fruitiger, age 47, also was taken
to the Good Samaritan Hospital yester
day. Mr. Fruitiger's hand was bruised
and one finger broken when he was
caught In a freight elevator at the
Hunt Transfer Company's warehouse,
wnere no is employed.
WHISKY EMPTIED IN SEWER

Justice Hays and Marshals Olson and
Kelsey this afternoon emptied into a
sewer the contents of 104 quart bottles
of whisky, part of what was brought
here by Clyde J. Thomas, now servin
60 days in the County Jail after a plea
of guilty.
Thomas said he brought four suit-
eases and a hand satchel filled with
liquor, beside expressing a trunk, 120
quarts in all. Three suitcases, the
satchel and trunk were seized. One
suitcase and 16 bottles are still missing.
GARDEN DIRECTOR LEAVES
Vane G. Gibson Accepts Federal Po
sition in Seattle.
Vane G. Gibson has resigned from
the position of county club leader of
boys' and girls' work In gardening in
Portland, and will go to Seattle to serve

Mr. Gibson came to Portland in April,
representing the Un.ted States Depart
ment of Agriculture, Oregon Agricul
tural College and School IMstric No. 1
in the garden work in Multnomah
County. He will take up his new work

Governor Fixes September 15 as
Time for Registration.

Saturday. September 15, has been set
as women's registration day by Gov
ernor Withycombe, who today issued
the following proclamation at the re
quest of Mrs. Charles H. Castner, of
Hood River, head of the women's divi
sion of the State Council of Defense:
"Whereas, The women of America, as well
as the men who are giving themselves to
our Nation's cause, can now perform a great
and timely public service; and,
Whereas, The woman's committee of the
Council of National Defense is organizing
local councils in every community in this
state for the purpose of systematizing and
making effective women's patriotic services;
and.
Whereas. The Oregon division of the
woman's committee of the Council of Na
tional Defense desires that Saturday, Sep
tember 15. 1917, be set aside as the day for
the registration of women in this state for
service ;
Now Therefore, in view of the foregoing
-premises and by virtue of the authority In
me vested, I, James Withycombe, Governor
of the state of Oregon, do hereby proclaim
Saturday. September 10, 1917, as Women's
Registration day, and I do earnestly ask
that all patriotic women register, on that
day for patriotic service.

Couple Married More Than Year, and
Cruel Treatment Starts Soon After

Touth's dream of love has been shat
tered in the home of Helen and Russell
Osborn, according to the youthful wife,
who started suit yesterday for a divorce
from her 20-year-old husband on
grounds of cruelty and non-support.
They were married in May of last year,
and the cruel treatment started a few
days after the marriage, the wife de
clares. She seeks alimony of $20 a
month for the support of their infant
child.
Non-support and desertion are the
charges contained in the divorce com
plaint of Julia Sharpe against J. F.
Sharpe. They were married in 1911
and have one child, whose custody the
plaintiff seeks.
Jessie English refused to cook his
meals for him and also treated him
coldly a goodly portion of the time,
asserts Clare English in his divorce
suit. They have two children, whom
he is willing should be given to the
custody of the mother under the pro
vision that he be allowed to see them
at all reasonable times. He agrees to
pay $20 a. month for their support,
Olive Jarred complains that Arthur
Jarred has given her several severe
beatings during recent weeks, and for
that reason wants her legal, freedom.
She also asks for $20 a month for the
support of their small child. They
were married in 1913.
Cruelty and non-support are the
charges preferred against Charles Sut
ton in the divorce complaint of Alaxel
Sutton They were married in 1906 and
have one child, whose custody the
plaintiff seeks. She seeks J10 a month
for the child's support.
Red Cross Drive Planned.
VANCOUVER, Wash., Sept. 1. (Spe
cial.) A campaign, to get additional
members for the Vancouver Red Cross
chapter will be waged Labor day. To
stimulate interest in Red Cross work,
and. to show what is being done by the
local society, an exhibit of all the va
rious branches of work undertaken
will be made. Bandages, compresses.
surgical dressings and knit comforts
will be shown. The local chapter has
a workroom In the Blaker building.
which is open daily and at which from
20 to 50 women work on lied Cross ar
ticles dally.
Battery B to Benefit.
A patriotic meeting will be held Mon
day night at the City Hall In Milwau-
kle. w. Cronan, of Portland, will
speak and the Portland, Railway, Light
& Power Company employes band will
play. No admittance fee will be
charged, but a silver offering will be
taken up for the fund of Battery Bf
