' x v , "4 I - ''" BEITISH tanks have been brought into play in the campaign in the Holy Land and they appeared be fore the gates of ancient Gaza- Oaza lies about two miles from the Mediter ranean protected from attack on its western side by high sand dunes, well fortified. The city is the center of trade and travel over the desert in the south. The armies of Barneses, of Alex ander, of the Crusaders, and of Napo leon must have marched across this very landscape. . Charles A. Edison, son of Thomas A. Edison, the electrical wizard, presented to the Fifth New Jersey Infantry one of the new phonographs designed specially for the Army and Navy. The phonograph ia reinforced with Iron and can be thrown into an Army wagon or into a ship's hold without damage. The outer case is waterproof and fireproof. It is designed for the open, air and can be heard for 200 yards. The machine is exclusive to these branches of the service. Only 800 have been made thus far. Hundreds of Red Cross ambulance drivers and members of Red Cross Sani tary Units are being trained for service abroad at the training camp of the Array Medical Corps at Allentown, Pa. "Longshoregirls," clad in khaki overalls and jackets, are driving trol ley cars, locomotives, electric winches, cranes, derricks, and other machinery on the docks of the Bush Terminal Company in Brooklyn, N. Y. They are also capable workers on board ship, mounting the ringing with alacrity of eld tars. All the young women are employes of the company and have been trained to fill tha places of men In cases of emer gency. The company expects to lose a. good many men on account of the war and this class was organized to take their places. A demonstration was recently held to convince other corporation officials of the possibilities of woman labor. The latest types of aeroplanes being built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Com pany for the United States will be well represented in the great air fleet now in construction for the United States. This biplane is the evolution of the f ignting machines that' have been in use by the belligerent powers since the beginning of the war, all the modern, features are represented. m m m Cabinet members, most of whom are beyond the military age and are ex empt from service, are putting in a daily period of training so that their physical condition will be of the best, and that they may handle their Jobs in winning fashion. Good health and vig or are essentials in getting the best out of me a. Cabinet members and other government officials realizing this aro training under the direction of Walter Camp, the famous Tale athlete. United States Soldier boys in France attract no end of attention wherever they go and they invariably bring cheers from the French spectators. British machine guns are coming in handy as "Archie" or antiaircraft weapons on the "Western front and they are proving effective in bringing down hostile aircraft. A great fleet of airplanes is now be ing built tor the American Army and hi factories are -ushing the various parts and assembling them with all possible speed, ureal numoers of new fivers are be'ng lurnea out every week. Within a few months these machines will probably be carrying American birdmen over tho fighting lines in France, clearing the skies of Gormans. Xf count the prospective participation of American aviators in the' war. He speaks scoffingly of the thousands of aeroplanes constructed and to be built. When American machines start buzzing in the higher altitudes above the firing line, he will change his mind. German prisoners are working In the American training camp in France. It must be bitter gall for these Ger man prisoners to have to work, to make things comfortable for the American troops. United States troops are again en camped on the field ef Gettysburg. No more historic scene could have been selected for a camp, than this spot, the site of the turning point in the Civil War. On this field where monuments rise everywhere testifying to the brav ery of American, troops, the soldier of today is in the sort of surroundings that breeds the fighting spirit that wins. United States Regulars and several thousand embryonic "Sammies" are in training here learning military tactics. The weekly quantity of benzine allowed taxicabs CONEY CLAIMS VICTIMS Warm Hair-Holiday Sends 100,000 People Into Surf. - NEW YORK, July t9. A warm holi day afternoon attracted 100.000 surf bathers to the beaches at Coney Island Saturday, and a strong undertow kept the lifeguards along the whore so busy that all of them were exhausted last night. The police estimated that the guards had to assist 100 persous from the water, while it was necessary for them to go out to warn thousands of inexpert swimmers' to remain within the lifelines. Two drownings were re ported. Isaac Auster. of 805 Myrtle avenue. Brooklyn, was caught by the under tow and taken so far out that the guards were unable to reach him im mediately. A pujmotor from the Coney Island Hospital failed to restore Auster to consciousness. Jacob Finklestein, of 163 Lenox avenue, was drowned at the foot of East Thirtieth street, despite the efforts of iiieguards and otner swimmers to get him to shore. He had been warned of the undertow and in structed to remain within the lifelines. 1 t ii : Germans Export Belgian Food. STOCKHOLM. July 18. While Bel gium goes hungry the Germans are ex. porting Belgian vegetables and fruits. Large quantities of Belgian., asparagus and hothouse peaches have been on sale in Stockholm's leaning snops lor weeks. It is also worthy of note that certain shops are advertising women's costumes imported direct from Vienna.
