UNITED STATES NATIONAL BANK NOW LOCATED IN ITS NEW HOME
Nicolai
Neppach Co.
The doors of the magnificent new
four-story home of the United States
National Bank building, which covers
a full quarter-block of land on the
northwest corner of Sixth and Stark
streets, will be thrown open to the
public for the first time tomorrow
morninir with everything in perfect
shape for the transaction of business.
The new building will mark the fifth
home that has been occupied by the
United States National Bank of Port
land. The first location used by the
bank, commencing- in 1891, was at 62
Klrst street, near Pine street, and next
to the old headquarters of the North
ern Pacific Kxpress Company.
Because of a fire upstairs In the First
etreet location the bank was moved
In 1893 to the Concord building, -at Sec
ond and Stark streets. The high wa
ter of 1894 caused a temporary remov
al to one of the floors of The Oregonian
building, which was occupied until the
high water subsided.
Consolidation Was In 1002.
"When the United States National
Bank consolidated with the Alnsworth
National Bank, In November, 1902, re
moval wss made to the Alnsworth
building. Third and Oak streets, which
has been the home of the bank in re
cent years, and from which the ef
fects of the bank are now being car
ried to the -new banking house.
The exterior of the new building,
which was planned by a Portland archi
tect. A. K. Doyle, is of a light pinkish
grey terra cotta, on a base of pink
granite.
The Sixth-street facade consists of
a colonnade or portico of six free
standing corlnthian columns 48 feet
high, surmounted by a richly orna
mented Roman frieze, cornice and bal
ustrade. In the center is the entrance to Ihe
bank and at the extreme right adjoin
ing the Wells-Fargo building Is the
entrance to the elevator lobby for ac
cess to the three floors of offices above
the bank.
Doora Bear Symbols.
The outer entrance doors to ths
bank and all exterior windows are of
ornamental cast iron, replicas of early
Greek and Roman coins and some early
American coins being used as motive
in the decorative features. The United
States eagle, scales of justice, the
wise owl. the beehive symbolical of
saving, thrift and frugality, and other
symbolical decorative motives are used
In addition to the coins.
The Stark-street facade is similar
to Sixth street, except that flat Corin
thian pilasters are used between the
windows in place of the columns, and
there is only one entrance at the ex
treme left, near Broadway.
The banking room Is 30 feet high,
with decorative plaetr ceiling, and a
mezzanine floor on three sides. The
public space or lobby Is a large open
space in the center of the room, 42 by
66 feet, unbroken by columns. The
banking fixtures are of marble, bronze
and plate glass. The walls and ceil
ings are decorated, using considerable
color.
Coins and symbolical motives are
used in the plaster and marble deco
rations of the interior as well as in
the terra cotta and iron on the ex
terior. The toilets, recreation rooms and
locker rooms for men employes are in
the basement and the reft room and
toilet room for women employes' are
on the mezzanine floor.
Vaults Are In Basement.
All vaults are in the basement. They
are constructed of heavily reinforced
concrete, built in the form of an Island
and opening from a common vestibule.
All of the latest Improved devices
and equipment for bank operation are
used.
Careful consideration has been given
to the lighting, both natural and
artificial. Large ekylights are used
over the rear portion of the banking
room, and these, with the large win
dows in the two street fronts, give a
well-lighted interior.
The three upper floors are to be used
as an office building. The corridors
have marble floors and wainscot; all
woodwork Is of mahogany.
Local Firm. Faraiab. Material.
The carpentry, millwork and tile par
titions were done under a contract
granted to Thomas Aluir, while the
millwork was done by the Nlcolai-Nep-pach
Company. All of the plate glass
used In the construction was furnished
by the TV. P. Fuller Company.
The contract for the heating and
ventilating was In the hands of the
Kendall Heating Company, the steam
heat service being furnished by the
Northwest Electric Company.
The nonpareil cork tile used In the
officers' quarters, the cages and the
working space, the cork linotlle in the
elevators and corridors and the battle
ship linoleum on the counter tops and
In the vaults was furnished by the
Cork Floor Products Company, of which
C. A. Wolfgang is manager.
The hardware in the building, fur
nished by the Honeyman Hardware
Company, was manufactured by P. &
F. Corbin, of New Britain, Conn. The
locks are of the 10-unlt type and of
the Camden design, finished in light
statura statuary bronze. The balance of
