A season's blessing has descended upon
this vacation center, and to the tune
of complaints wliere the weather Is hot
and dry and detestable, soft breezes
fan the faces of those who are assem
bled for holidays at Newport.
tne roads over the mountains are
now a steady stream of incoming au
tos, and as the travelers alight at their
destination, it is not hard to discern
an unusually glad note in their coun
tenances betokening relief and thank
fulness. There has been an even tem
perature throughout the season and
bathing and beach activities have still
a popular favor that will make them
lasting pleasures until late In the Fall.
Newport's advantages are the combina
tion of the mountains and the sea and
the true beauties of both were never
more in evidence than at this resort.
Mountain streams are but a short dis
tance, while the evergreen groves are
on all sides. The long beach Is a
boulevard for all kinds of vehicles, and
hikers, agate hunters, fishermen and
clam-diggers, make the scene gay at
all times of the day and evening.
Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Heath, of Salem,
have opened a Nye Beach cottage for
a week. Mr. Heath Is a guard at the
State Penitentiary.
Clayton Manville, of Eugene, arrived
during the week and will remain at
this resort indefinitely.
W. H. Steele, of Paso Robles, Cal., Is
experiencing the delights of the Oregon
coast weather.
Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Jones and family,
of Brownsville, came In the first of the
week and are ensconced in a Nye Beach
cottage.
Professor Pernot, of Portland, state
bacteriologist, who has been enjoying
a fortnights vacation with his family
at Nye Beach, returned home Monday.

ers had been a nurse in the Eugene
Hospital for some time. Mr. and Mrs.
Bowers will make their future home

Considerable excitement was evi
denced In Newport Wednesday night
when Mrs. M. W. Wiley, of Portland,
lost control of the car which she was
driving and was carried the full length
of the boardwalk on Main street. The
car struck several other machines
along the curbing in its mad flight, but
with no damage, and as it Jumped from
the walk to the road below Mrs. Wiley
was able to turn off the power. The
trouble was caused by a broken brake.
Mrs. Ella. J. Metzger. of Dallas, who
has been summering in Newport, left
for her home Tuesday. Her nephew,
Hugo Milsap. of Lebanon, has been
with Mrs. Metzger for a portion of the
season. Mr. Milsap was recently ap
pointed to Annapolis.

Gearhart is all excitement over the
approaching tournament, and many of
the enthusiastic golfers are brushing
up on their game by taking lessons in
certain strokes from the teacher who
is summering here. The links are in
excellent condition, the greens being
particularly attractive as well as splen
oma lor playing.
Such a galaxy of gaily-colored sweat
ers as dot the vivid green links is
seldom outrivaled. The women appear
to nave an endless array of these fas
clnating garments, many of them mak
ing their own slipovers and coats, so
that they are not extravagant in their
having such an abundant supply of the
covering. The little ones are equally
well attired in gay sweaters, all the
colors being counted in one sweeping
glance over the links and beach.
There is not enough time to accom
plish all the things the Summer visi
tors here are determined to do. They
are going in with a vengeance for
swimming, golfing, riding, motoring,
walking to maintain their willowv
figures and good complexions, surfing
and picnicking by way of diversion.
James Nicol recently arrived and has
his string of fine saddlers and ponies
in use every hour. Motoring to Neah
kahnie and Cannon Beach for picnics
is quite the order of the weekly pro
gramme, and, of course, all gaieties
cease when the "Papa Special" Is due
on Saturday afternoons. Every kiddle
and mother, sister and auntie throng

Weyerhaeuser's brother, C. H. Davis,
Jr., and Mrs. Davis in their attractive
cottage. Mrs. Weyerhaeuser is a charm
lng and attractive young matron, and
is being delightfully entertained by
several former friends who are sum
mering here.
W. G. Davidson, of the North Bank
Road, visited his little daughters over
the week-end at the Westcott cottage.
Mrs. Tongue and Miss Bertha Tongue
arrived last week for a visit with
Mrs. Gay Lombard in one of the Beck-
man cottages.
Chester G. Murphy spent the week
end in Seaside with his family.
Mrs. J. A. Dougherty, who went to
Portland early In the week. Is again in
the Kinney cottage with her family.
Mrs. Victor Johnson arrived last week
for a visit with Mrs. John Latta. The
Johnson boys also are guests of the
Latta children.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph E. Williams and
children came down several days ago
to occupy the Boyd Hamilton cottage
for the balance of the Summer.
Mr. and Mrs. Isador Lang returned
again to their cottage here, and have
as guests Mrs. James Rosenfeld and
baby and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Ditten
hoefer. of St. Paul, the latter also be
ing a daughter of the Langs. Mrs.
Dlttenhoefer is an exceptionally attrac
tive matron, and Is considered one o
the best-dressed women here, as well
as In her home city. Dr. Rosenfeld
passed a few days with the Langs, and
is numbered among the ardent golfers

turned to Portland, their cottage being
occupied by- Mrs. H. M. Patton and
daughter. Elizabeth.
Mrfc. E. J. Labbe returned Monday to
Portland for a few days' visit at he
home.
Frank Robertson spent several days
last week at his cottage here, return
ing Monday to Portland.
Oskar Huber and his daughter, Eliza
beth. went to Portland Monday for
brief stay. August Berg, who passed

day to Portland.
Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Goldsmith are
the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel
Rosenblatt.
Mr. and Mrs. Graham Glass arrived
the latter part of last week to open
their cottage for the season, and Mrs.
Joseph E. Wiley and son. Peter, Joined
them Sunday. Mr. Glass returned to
Portland Monday night.
Arnold Rothwell was a week-end vis
itor of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Van Schuy
ver, who are summering . In the An-
drews cottage. Mr. Van Schuyver and
Mr. Rothwell returned to town Sunday.
