Automobiles No Longer Rarity on Manhattan Beach, but Soft Sands Are to Be. Avoided, as Portland Parties Can Testify.

cellent weather hero Is having

heated cities the people who seek the
comforts of cooler spots. Sunshiny
"Weather, with a mild breeze to fan
the warm brow, has been the order
here for several weeks, and constantly
people are arriving- in from Portland
and paints east oi the mountains to
escape from 100-degree weather.
Automobiles here are no longer a
rarity, as often one arrives via the
hard beach sand. One can leave the
Jnaiu road at the Rockaway end, and
take to the beach and make good time
Into Manhattan. In a recent party that
came in from Portland by motor were
Mr. and Mrs. A. Allman, Airs. Arthur
Kuhnhausen and Walter Kuhnhausen.
of Portland, who arrived last Satur
day. Sunday the men returned to
Portland, leaving the ladies domiciled
t the Kuhnhausen . Summer home,
Bellvue cottage, for a fortnight. An
event of the trip was the arrival at
Manhattan, where the incoming tide
forced the car to the soft sands, mak
ing it impossible to stop with any as
eurance of getting the car started
again. Unloading on the move, with
baggage and luggage heaved over
fcoard as rapidly as possible, the car
circled around several times, until all
was unloaded, and then the car was
run back up the beach to Rockaway
to await the return trip. Generally,
however, the hard sand Is free for
use as a speedway, and many pleasure
sefkers are taking advantage of It.
W. E. Andreson, of Tillamook, was
here over Sunday as the guest of the
Huston family, at the Crescent Hotel.
Mr. and Mrs. E. Kuhnhausen, of
Portland, who were here for a week
at their Summer home, have returned
to Portland.
A new cottage Is being erected under
the direction of J. C. Withers, of Port
land, for the family's future Summer
comfort.
Mrs. Carl Anderson, of Portland. Is
here for a two weeks' stay with Miss
Jessie Francis, at the Kill Kare Kot?
tage. The Francis boys, Walter, Wes
ley and Fred, who were here for a
fortnight, have returned to their work

F. H. Leitner and daughter Freda,
of Portland, were week-end visitors at
the family Summer cottage. Dolce Far

Misses Bertha and Emma are quar
tered for the Summer.
Mr. and Mrs. P. M. Othus. of Port
land, were here for a few days' recre
ation, and were domiciled at the Bee
Hive cottage. On a crabbing expedi
tion to the near-by Jetty, they secured
tome fine specimens.
Mr. T. B. Gilman and sons, Robert
Tid Harold, are here from Portland
for the week-end with Mrs. Gilman at
the family cottage at Maroney Town.
The men made the trip via automo
bile. The Misses Agnes ci.d Grace Clark,
of Portland, are here at the Belmont
cottage with' Mrs. Lofting for a few
weeks' vacation.
Mrs. P. E. Young and Mrs. P. O.
Wicks, who have been here for the
past two weeks at the Demming cot
tage, were joined for the last week
end by their husbands, the entire party
returning on Sunday to their Portland
home.
Arriving during the week for a few
weeks' stay at Cole's Camp were Mr.
and Mrs. E. F. Boubell and son. George,

Crabs are plentiful, and perch fish
ing from the Nehalem jetty is still a
popular pastime. The near-by Lake
Lytle also claims the attention of fish
ermen for trout, and the western shore
Is popular among the swimmers. The
daily parade from Manhattan to the
lake Is an event joined in by many, who
prefer the warmth of still waters to the
exhilaration of the surf, and diving,
swimming and rowing are diversions
that inak Rummer days all too short.

at Rockaway. Campers and cottagers
have been pouring in steady streams.

MOCK WEDDIXG IS FEATURE
Lively Week Enjoyed hy Numerous
Visitors at Bayocean.
BAYOCEAN, Or.. July 21, (Special.)
Bayocean spirit has resumed its
usual Summer activity, and things are
stirring along at a good clip. Hiking
parties, clamming expeditions, bonfire
festivities, dancing events, house par
ties and outdoor and indoor social af
fairs of varied nature and extensive
number are combining to make this one
of the most successful of Bayocean
seasons.
The good time era was well started
on its way last Tuesday evening by the
affair given by Mrs. Mary Leonard,
popular manager of the Bungalow City.
Preceding an evening of cards and re
freshments, a mock wedding was
staged that for application to detail
would be hard to exceed. Some very
well-known Portlanders, who are here
for the Summer, took part in the cere
mony. A peculiar and unparalleled
feature of the event was the fact that
the husband of the bride performed
the ceremony, and the wife of the
groom acted as maid of honor. Brides
maids and flower girls, with all the
trimmings and fixings of a real wed
ding, were arranged, and the- altar and
auditorium decorations were certainly
magnificent. Arrayed in men's cloth
ing, and taking the part of the bride's
father, giving away an only child, was
one of the most prominent women of
the Summer colony here.
Among the Summer folk here are Mr.
and Mrs. W. J. Pittman. of Portland,
who are at the All Forces Inn for two
weeks. On Tuesday morning, while
promenading the beach. Mr. Pittman
picked up a sealed bottle, containing
the following message:
"June 15. 1910. Thrown overboard
off Diamond Head. Honolulu. Joe
Schmuck. Address 58 Commercial St.
San Francisco. California." There are
numerous messages picked up along
the Bayocean coast., but seldom one
that has drifted bo long.
Thomas A Baird, of Portland, was
here during the week for a brief rcc
reation.
Mrs. W. II. Lynch is here for the sea
son, and with her are her daughter
and grandson. Mrs. Alice Kelly and
son, Billie. The latter, who is about
18 months old, has great fun in the
Natatorium. and often is the center
of attraction when he goes in.
About 20 young friends enjoyed a
birthday party on the beach with Har
old McGregor last Monday evening.
Watermelon was the piece de resist
ance, while cake and toasted marsh
mallows happily filled In the time.

have taken the Gladiolia bungalow
for a two weeks vacation.

and who intend to remain for at least
two weeks.

the past week was the party given
by John Baldwin, at his Summer home.
the Bear's Retreat, on Wednesday
night. Among those present were:

tages are filled and the hotel is doing

week-end at the Edelweiss. With them
was their son, Melvin.
Mrs. George Jefcott and son George,
Jr., are here from Portland for a
month's stay.
Adele Lovell and Grace Fowler, of
Portland, are in the Die Freude cot
tage for a week.
OCEANLAKE IS BTJSV PLACE
Frank McGettigan Is Building New
Summer Home at Resort.
OCEANLAKE, Or., July 21. (Spe
cial.) Good roads, good fishing, a
splendid, wide, smooth beach, and good.
Jolly crowds are the agencies that
make this resort such a popular place.
Every day almost sees a number of
cars arriving along the road, and
Oceanlake, with its appealing beauty
and unique location, draws many. New
cottages are being built, and Summer
homes in profusion will soon dot the
many meadows and lake-side spots.
Among the more recent Portlanders
to choose Oceanlake for their Summer
home was Frank McGettigan, manager
of the Orpheum Theater. He is having
a dainty little bungalow built in the
meadow near the ridge. He has re
turned to Portland, but will make fre
quent week-end trips to join his wife,
who is in the Tompsett cottage fo
this season.
In an auto party that was here for
an over-Sunday visit were Mr. ant
Mrs. D. Oowans. and David. Russell
and Miss Nancy Gowans. of Portland.
Al Sequin and son, of Portland, have
arrived and opened the family cottage
for the remainder of the season.
Quartered in the Laurthy cottage is
a happy party composed of the fol
lowing from Pendleton: Mrs. M. M.
Wyrick and daughter Hazel, Mrs. G. B.
Wyrick and daughters. Mildred and
Dorothy. They are here for all of
July and August.
Mrs. F. P. Tompsett is visiting for
a week or so in Portland and valley
points.
