The life of any business depends on selling and on salesmanship, and they are especially applicable to those in tlie automobile business. It is true that these questions have received some care and attention by those who have inade successes, but they will, if anything-, receive more attention in the luture. They are all important. They are all essential. The automobile dealer desiring- to achieve distinction must be careful in the management of his business. And care in the management means the organization, the development and the successful running- of each department. The automobile dealer must exercise the same care and attention as the most Judicious business man in any other line of business. Be thorough and plan with & definite Ideal in mind. And then work out that ideal. Do not let it remain a mental dream. Many dealers start out with Rood intentions, but do not seem to possess the desire nor will power to actually finish their work. You must be able to grasp and master each detail. You must know intimately each department of your business, and each branch must be efficient. And when a high order of efficiency is at tained, keep it at that standard. Men W ho Act Needed. Surround yourself with men who Secure men who not only think, but who will put their business thoughts Into performance. In business it is not only necessary to have ideas, but it is necessary to start them working. An Idea is not of any value unless It is put Into execution. Your men should know the business as thoroughly as yourself. You would not think this advice was necessary, but it is. and this is one of the rea sons why so many achieve half suc cess. You must remember that with knowledge conies confidence. And con fidence breeds enthusiasm. And you cannot make a success without this vital spark. Knthuslasm Is the.spark plug- of your business. It is the one thing that must ignite and keep on exploding all your business life. And as the leader you must inspire- those who ar"e working with you. Keep your men on their toes. They must be of your mind. You must remember that you are the busi ness. And it will he as big as you are, and no bigger. Your men will be Just what you make them. They look to you for help, inspiration, guidance and standards. A headless business usually means no business. Be the head not only for a day. but every day. Your business needs it. No business can run itself. Make your sales policy an aggressive one. Not only aggressive, but honest and sincere. A prospect, before he makes a purchase, not only believes in the product he contemplates buying, but in the promises you make. And. so, do not be free with promises. Tell him the things you will actually do, and then live up to them. Be known as a man who keeps his promises. Be known as a man who may be depended upon in every way. It is a most valuable asset. Probably the most valuable of all next to selling a meritorious pro duct. Be careful about your showroom. Klrst impressions are Important and, usually, lasting. See to it that the prospect is favorably Impressed when lie walks Into your place of business. Do not find it necessary to make ex cuses for the appearance of anything. Have each car looking its best. Be in a position to answer any question. It is jour business to know all about your product. Know the most minute thing. You may not be asked it, but what a comfortable feeling it is to know that your knowledge of the car you are selling is thorough. Good Word Safer Than Bad One. Mind your business. Let the other man alone. Sell your car, do not bother about a single competitor. Do not be brought Into any controversy. It Is always safer to say a good word than a bad one. Do not neglect a prospect, but follow him up consistently until he buys of you or someone else. When a pros pect once takes up the subject of pur chasing a car, he does not, as a rule, do it tor the moment. Usually it is a subject he has given a good deal of thought. And you should take It for granted that he is deeply interested. Of course, there are exceptions, uut In the main the rule holds good. Your service department is as im portant as any branch of your business. Watch it closely. Employ men who are not only competent, but who take gen uine interest in their work. Careless workmen are the most expensive, re gardless of the little money you pay them. They will ruin your business as quickly as any other one thing. Good Will Creates Customer. Strive for good will. Yeu need It. Good will creates new customers, and that Is what the energetic and wide awake man Is looking for. Ir is the new customers that keep your business going. Use methods that will help. There are many and varied ways. Be modern. You must remember that these are keen, competitive days. - The business man who keeps abreast of the times Is the man who leads. Think. And then think some more. You can't do too much of it. and it Isn't an easy thing to do. Ideas come from concentration. And respect an idea when it comes to you. It is prob ably as good as the next man's. The average man usually discounts his own Ideas. This is & mistake. Believe In yourself. New Car Owners in County. THE daily reports of M. O. Roads Are In Splendid Condition and Tourists Are Assured of Ideal Conditions. Motorists who contemplate maklne a motor trip through Central Oregon are advised by Charles M. Menzles, manager of the Northwest Auto Com pany, to set forth in the near future if they wish to experience Ideal condi tions. For the primary purpose of deliver ing; a new Marmon car in Bend. Mr. Menzles and his family made the trip about 10 days ago, returning; by a train a few days later. "-Without any effort at all we made he 94 miles from Portland over the Columbia River Hlehway to The Dalles In less than five hours, which proves that all portions of the river highway are in at least fairly good shape," said Mr. Menzles upon his return to Port land. "From The Dalles to Wasco and south to Moro, Grass Valley, Kent, An telope, Madras and Bend we found the roads In splendid shape. In my opin ion they couldn't possibly have been better. The season was not late enough to produce much dust and the roads had not yet been cut up by wagon traveL It was a trifle warm in a few places, but hardly oppressive. "From one point we could see seven snow-capped mountain peaks. Tne City of Bend is certainly well worth going a long way to visit and I would advise anyone desiring a week-end trip of about that length to strike out for the progressive little Central Oregon city while the roads are in such good con dition."
