PRISON CONDITIONS WILL BE THEME OF SERMONS TODAY Sunnyside Congregational Church to Have Home-coming Today to Celebrate Twenty-fifth Anniversary of Organization Special Services Arranged at White Temple. TODAY has been designated "Prison Sunday." Ministers all over the state who have the Interests of the prisoners at heart will give the subject some recog nition. Many who have not made the subject the main topic are planning to introduce into their discourse an ex planation of the need of having a new penitentiary. Today will be the first link in a four day celebration of the 25th anniver sary of the Sunnyside Congregational Church. It is to be known as Home coming day. All former members and friends are invited to Bpend at least a part of the day with the home church. The pastor. Dr. J. J. Staub, will preach the anniversary sermon at 11 o'clock. Children's day celebration in the audi torium, with cantata, "The Morning of Life," at 9:45 A. Jl. Special services by the Endeavor societies at 3 P. M. and 6:15 P. M. Dr. Luther R. Dyott, of the First Congregational Church, will represenC the Congregational churches of the city and state In. a ser mon at 7:45 P. M. A special musical programme will accompany the evening service. The public is cordially invited. "Burning the Bridges" will' be the theme of Rev. Calvin B. "Waller's ser mon at the White Temple tonight. This will be a plea to people who have been hestitating with reference to a spirit ual decision for life. Dr. Waller is an evangelist as well as a pastor and has conducted many evangelistic campaigns before coming to Portland. The even ing services at the White Temple have brought many to decide to begin a new and better life, and have aroused , church members to greater activity. The gospel song -service conducted by William Mansell Wilder will begin, at 7:45 o'clock. "The Face of Jesus" will be the morn ing theme. Communion service at the close of the morning worship. The Temple quartet will sing at both services. Congregational Secretaries to Hold Conference. Women'! League of First Church Given Successful Entertainment for Red Cross. In the evening Dr. Dyott will speak at the Sunnyside Con gregational Church and Rev. Warren Jlorse, pastor of the Atkinson Memorial Church, will occupy the pulpit of the First Church. There will be special music both morning and evening. The District Coast secretaries of the Congregational Church will hold a conference in the First Church on June S, 6 and 7. These meetings are not of a public character, but for the purpose of making the work under the auspices of the Congregational churches in the states of Washington, Oregon. A most successful entertainment was given in the parlors of the First Con gregational Church on Friday evening under the auspices of the Women's League for the benefit of the Ameri can Red Cross Society. Public Appeal to Be Made for Liberty Loan. Episcopalian Clersrr Instructed by Biahop to Urge Sacrifice in Behalf of Nation. ryiHE Episcopal clergy in the Diocese A. of Oregon have been, urged by Bishop Sumner to present to their re spective congregations the desirability of every person making a sacrifice to contribute to the liberty loan. "It is a matter of righteousness," says the Bishop, "that the country be supported financially during these war days. Let us do what we can In patriotism for our country. Mrs. Bowen also went to Eugene, and Monday they will attend the commencement exercises of the State University, their son Alexander being a member of the graduating clasB. The Bible study class of the East Side Christian Church had a large num ber present at its Thursday evening sessions because It deals with ques tions of everyday interest. Rev. R. H. Sawyer has been requested to repeat the study on "The Conscription Law as Shown in the Scriptures," and has an nounced that it will be given In con nection with the lesson Sunday morn' ing. "A Merger Service" will be in augurated at this time, and, if It proves successful, will hereafter take the place of the regular Bible school and morning preaching service. Husk, died in this citv Mjv 9. Mrs. Husk was 81 years old, but was at all times active in the Christian Church, of which she was a member. fiho was born in Lafayette, Ind., and married in the same city. 63 years ago. She was the mother of 12 children. five of whom are living. Mrs. M. F. Crockwell, of 7806 Sixty-fourth ave nue Southeast, is the only- daughter living in Portland, and it was with her that Mrs. Husk made her home. Other children are G. W. and W. C. .Husk, of Olympia, Wash.; Mrs. Alfred Haworth, Boring, Or., and Mrs. Rosa J. Scranton, of Seattle. Mr. Husk is 91 years old. He also belongs to the First Christian Church. "Our Work in Japan" will be the subject of the Y. W. C. A. vesper serv ice at 4:30 P. M. todayi Letters from the secretary in Japan, Miss Ruth Emerson, will be read. Japanese chil dren will sing. There will be a social hour at 5:30 o'clock. All girls are invited. Rev. W. Lee Airheart Will Preach This Morning. Dr. Stansfield to Lecture on "Twice Bom Men" Tonight. TODAY being the first Sunday of the month, in keeping with the custom in the First Methodist Church Dr. Stansfield will deliver the regular monthly sermon-lecture at the evening hour. .The theme will be, "Twice-Born Men." In the book of this title, by Harold Begble. upon which this sermon lecture is based, the author tells, the story of a few humble and quite com monplace human beings living on some shabby streets huddled together in one quarter on the edge of the city of Lon don. It is something of a biography of a number of social outcasts who have been reclaimed by the regen erating power of Christianity told -In thrilling deeds, and brings to the sur face for observation, feelings, strug gles and experiences which contribute much extraordinary material to re ligious psychology. Dr. Stansfield has been selected to preach the baccalaureate sermon be fore the Oregon Agricultural College at Corvallis and will not be in his pul pit this morning. The sermon at that hour will be preached by Rev. Walter Lee Airheart, assistant pastor. The theme of the sermon will be, "Citizen Christian." Societies' Having Highent Percent- -a V -''-. i m ' j m j THE Willamette Baptist Young Peo ple's Association held their annual meeting for election of officers, to gether with their quarterly rally, in the White Temple Tuesday evening. The societies composing the association were well represented, including dele gations from Astoria and "Vancouver. The president, Harley K. Hallgren, presided. The Bong service was con ducted by R. G. Lester. Fred Bertz led the devotional services and Ed C. Cofer, former president of the association, gave an address on "The Power of Christ." Three beautiful banners were award ed to the societies having the highest percentages. The banner for total mileage traveled was awarded to the Astoria society. The banner for per centage of membership present was awarded to the Bethany Baptist soci ety. The'banner for work accomplished was awarded to the Highland Baptist society. The secretary's annual report by Miss Lydla Pllter, was comprehensive proof of the excellent work accomplished by the retiring officers under the able leadership of the president, Harley K. Hallgren.
