The executive committee of the Interstate Evergreen Hiar'nwav Association has proposed the exteualon of the highway as to run from Vancouver. B. C. to the Mexican border at El Paso. Texas, a distance of 2800 miles. The. route, will be from Vancouver south over the Pacific Highway to the Columbia River, thence east with the north bank ef the Columbia and over the Bnake River plateau to Lewiston. Idaho; thence througrh the Snake River can yon, partly on the Oreeron and partly on the Idaho side, to Welser; thence by way of Boise. Twin Kails. Oprden, Halt Lake City, the Grand Canyon, Prts ott. Phoenix, Tucson, Bisbee and Xouirlas. to El Paso. The advocates of this route are Im pressed with its paramount utility In military mobilization because of its two commanding; advantages in that, first. It connects the Pacific Coast and both National boundaries with the food-producing- interior, and. second, it Is the only route into the Pacifio North west over which motor trucks could be operated every day in the year. It fol lows water (trades. It connects In one ohaln the cities of the United States blessed with the least annual rainfall and the largest percentage of possible sunshine. Throughout its entire length elim&tlo conditions, soli formations and contours are such as to eliminate trou fcies from mud. All-Year Auto Road Valuable. The highway will also serve local divisions as a utility road, usable ths year round: in some states breaking the bonds of Isolation which have ham pered maximum industrial develop ment, as in the counties of Wallowa and Baker, in Oregon, and some of the counties of Southern Utah not served by a railroad; in other states, as in "Washington and Idaho, supplying a long-hoped-for means of uninterrupt ed communication between two grand subdivisions, separated by mountain barriers. To Southwestern Idaho and Northeastern Oregon the construction of an oJl-year auto road is an enter prise promising more beneficent re sults, perhaps, than the coming of a railroad from south to north. As a Bummer tourist route the Ever green Highway offers attractions legion In number; the Indescribable outdoor wonders, beauties and pleas ures of the evergreen North Pacifio Coast, with its Summer temperature ranging In extremes between 70 and 80 degrees of 19 hours' sunlight; la clers, mountain peaks, lakes, beaches, white-topped peaks releasing waters that a-ive life, wealth and beauty to the world-famed valleys of the Yaki ma, Hood, White Salmon, Willamette. Puyallup and Walla Walla. In Idaho and Eastern Oregon the Jakes and woods of Wallowa County, Lake Pay ette, the canyon of the Snake River, rivaling in grandeur the Orand Can yon of the Colorado Shoshone Falls, Niagara of the West, the City of Rocks, Ice caves and lost rivers. Excursion la Planned. The association Is preparing to send a ipath-f inding automobile excursion over the whole route this Summer. The cars for the trip and a mechanician are to be provided through the cour tesy of tho Studebaker Corporation; the equipment of the Goodrich Rubber Company. In the party will be a repre sentative of the Automobile Blue Book, who will make a log of the route; a press correspondent; one of the best known platform entertainers of the Pacifio Northwest; B. F. Hill, of Walla Walla, Wash., president, and A. J. El rod, of Pasco, Wash., secretary of the association; I. N. June 2. (SDe ciaL -Motorists who have traversed the upper end of tho Columbia River Highway between this city and Cascade Locks during tho past several days report the road in fair condition. The Highway has been worked extensively by Hood River county supervisors, in co-operation with the county court. The surface has been dragged and debris and loose stones brought down by last winter s storms nave been re moved. Extensive Improvement has also been done on the east extension of the road in this county between Hood River and The JDalles. Both the stretches east and west of Hood River are in much better shape than last year, author!' ties declare. Motorists by the hundreds are using the Highway daily. The local streams and campsites in mountain retreats as well as the resorts of the valley are attracting many. Why a Seven Passenger? Comfort comes first in your mind.
