He enters one's vision as the glimpse of a time-mellowed canvas. There Is the genteel dignity of old days In his slow progress, a softness in his speech and the blessing of quiet age Is on him as a mantle. Now, as he steps slowly across the lobby of the Hotel Multnomah, his years are 86, the boyish eyes have seen the dreams of vast commonwealths by the blue Pacific come true, and he is Brigadier-General Hodges. of the United tates Army, retired. Each year, when the cherries bloom, he comes to Oregon. Osriiioa Duty Been la 52. "Garrison duty at Fort Vancouver, when I came out In '52, was Just garrison-duty, that's all." recalled General Hodges. Tet I was with the Snake River expedition, when we went out to punish certain Indians for the murder of emigrants that Fall before. We left in the early Summer of '53, Major Hal le r in command. "At old Fort Boise, a post of the Hudson's Bay Company, we found hun dreds of Indians congregated, for word naa gone to the tribes of our coming. Our scouts knew certain of the mur dered, and there we hanged them. He and we placed three Indians under ar rest. "Up the Boise River we took them, but one, the youngest of the three, tried to escape. He fell at a running shot, and. was killed. The, other two? Well, we" took the other two to the graves of the emigrants they had mur dered, and there we hung them." He beamed mildly. What about Portland in those days of early. Oregon.! now fated pio, neer city springing then from the heart of the Willamette woods? River Bordered by Forests. "Why." quoth the General naivelv. humor again in the blue eyes, "Port land was a nice town then, as 'tis now.
