Much publicity has been given the
towering pinnacles and leaping water
falls of the Columbia Highway, and it
may be well, but in these days of prac
tical inquiry and impending necessity
the prime exploitation of our states
attractions need not be scenic offer
ings at least not to the exclusion of
our resources.
On the Columbia Highway, about a
stone's throw from where the back
bone of the Cascade Mountains is cleft
by the lordly Columbia rolling west
ward to the sea. lies six acres of high
ly cultivated soil, in itself a veritable
land products show when variety and
Intensity of production are considered.
Scientific FarmlnK Lned.
The details of this farm or garden
are attended to by Mrs. Thompson, who
devotes to scientific farming the hours
she has to spare from the care and re
sponsibility of rearing a family of
eight sturdy children. The success of
Mrs. Thompson is typical of what may
be accomplished by scientific applica
tion in Oregon.
The variety of production is a revela
tion. To give a fair idea of the diver
sity and quantity of the products
grown on this tract would be tedious
in detail, but no ordinary product has
been slighted, and among those not
indigenous to Oregon which matured
last, year may be noted peanuts, sweet
potatoes, Swiss chard, broccoli, French
endive, Spanish and Japanese chest
nuts, Barcelona filberts, Satsuma
plums, Franquette and Mayette wal
nuts, four varieties of almonds, and
not the least is the dasheen.
Dasheen growing is in the experi
mental stage in Oregon. The writer
has heard of no other experiments in
the state other than those conducted
by Mrs. Thompson, but as a substitute
for potatoes, or more correctly as an
additional product, the dasheen is en
titled to great consideration.
Vegetable Is Staple Food.
This vegetable is a staple article of
food for million of people in tropical
and semitropical countries. In general
' it is used in the different ways in
which the Irish potato and sweet po
tato are used. The flesh of the large,
spherical corms and of the larger tub
ers is frequently somewhat gray or
violet when cooked, but this does not
affect the flavor. Tht time and man
ner of cooking is much the same as
potatoes.
The dasheen has an advantage over
the potato. It can bv grown as a Sum
mer crop in regions where the potato
must be grown as a Spring crop. It
yields as well as the potato and can
be successfully cultivated on wet lands
where the potato would be a failure.

cooked, can be substituted for spinach
at a time when the weather is too hot
to grow spinach. The nutty flavor of
the tubers gives them a peculiar pala
tablllty, which strikes the fancy of
many people.
Soli and Climate Salted.
The higher nitrogenous and starchy
content gives them an advantage as
food that makes the plant an even
more valuable food producer than the
potato. Mrs. Thompson's experiments
with dasheen prove that the soil and
climate of Oregon are well-suited for
general production of dasheen, and her
pioneering efforts doubtless will result
in Immeasurable good to the state.
To give a concrete example of what
may be accomplished In intensified
farming, the production of asparagus
affords a basis. On a patch containing
exactly one-tenth of an acre Mrs.
Thompson raised 500 pounds of aspara
gus, and the price last year was not
less than 10 cents a pcund. This would
make $500 an acre.
Mention should be made of Burbank's
new walnut tree, which is also to be
found growing as if In its native heath.
This tree bears in IS months and is
said to grow to 12 inches in diameter
in 12 years. Mrs. Thompson believes
that this variety of tree will become
of great value in reforesting logged-
off lands, where quick growth is the
desideratum.
While every detail of the cultivation
of the soil seems to have been attended
to and the highest production of veger
tables, berries and fruits are promised
for the coming year, the landscape and
flower features of the place have not
been forgotten and the rose bowers
and lawn blend so harmoniously with
the practical features of the places as
to show the wonderful possibilities and
attractions of "our highway" when
i gauged in the light of either artlstlo
I or practical comprehension.
