THE SUNDAY OKEGOJOAN, PORTLiOTJ, MARCH 4, 1917. IT Sixteen million people will read this announcement today in their Sunday Newspapers llllllllffi ,ii J I H,,,mnnililllH ' ..Miiilllllllllllllli Oneida Factory of Dodge Steel Products Corporation Daily Capacity 1S00 Steel Split fulleys MaimfiaeQiiurfiim Gommpaiiiy - lias acquired the properties and will control the manufacture o all the products oS ONEIDA STEEL PULLEY COMPANY and KEYSTONE STEEL PULLEY COMPANY of Oneida, New York In the future the sales and distribution of "WOOD AND IRON. SOLID AND SPLIT PULLEYS and mmmm STEEL SPLIT PULLEYS will be under the exclusive supervision and control of DODGE SALES AND ENGINEERING COMPANY of Mishawaka, Indiana through its many Branch Warehouses, District Organizations and their accredited Sales Agencies throughout the world. Foundation of the Pulley Industry 1882 Addition of the Steel Split Pulley 1917 liodge American System Rope Transmission Human progress, whether social, political or indus trial, has always been measured by the ability of the person, the party or the organization to render service to others. The rewards of true service-giving come naturally and quickly to him who is continually seeking that de velopment which will afford the opportunity to expand his present service. Thirty-five years ago Wallace H. Dodge conceived the idea of a split pulley made of hardwood, embodying the fundamental principles of compression shaft fas tening, and of an Interchangeable bushing system. In this original Dodge idea was the basis for a new commercial and economic de velopment which is now recognized as one of the most important branches of industrial engineering. i The Dodge Bushing System of 1882 remains unchanged in 1917; through its inter changeability a range of 108,000 pulleys with fixed bores, faces and diameters may be covered by an extrvne total of 2,700 pulleys of standardized bores and 40 bushings of proper shaft dimensions; this is the Dodge idea from the commercial viewpoint. From the economic viewpoint the factory owner now buys one pulley which may be fitted to 40 shafts instead of one, at the slight cost of a new bushing. In consequence, a pulley purchase of today is regarded as a permanent asset. Thus as early as 1882 Wallace EL Dodge, founder of Dodge Manufac turing Company, was acknowledged the inventor, natentee and toaster of the principles which today govern the manufacture of all stock pulleys. Addition of "Standard" Cast Iron Split Pulley 1900 In 1900, the "Standard" Cast Iron Split Pulley, using similar metallic interchangeable bushings, was added to the Dodge line by purchase; for even then the split bushed pulley was being copied in other materials than the orig inal wood type. The "Standard" Iron Split Pulley met with immediate favor in industry the world over; that first demand for a metallic pulley decreed as absolutely essential those same qualities of strength and perfect balance possessed by the original wood type Pulley users were unwilling then, as now, to accept lightness alone as a substitute for true-running and durability. At this time the "Standard" Iron Split Pulley was the only metallic pulley which would maintain, an absolutely round shape under all conditions of belt strain, a requisite necessary for efficiency of operation. Thus the "Standard" Iron Split Pulley became a part of the Dodge line fullborn; a product that had profited by and attained perfection through the pioneer invention of Mr. Dodge and the experience of others. Dodge Iron Center Wood Rim Pulley As the necessity for high speeds and unusual strains increased the Dodge Iron Center Wood Rim Pulley was developed to meet those severe conditions where rim veloci ties far exceeded recognized limits. It was discovered that increased strength against cen trifugal stress was not to be attained by increasing the thickness of the rim. Cast iron and wood had proved to be two great pulley materials; their combined use was neces sary in the perfection of this product for use as main driv ers and for that particular service which involves a con stantly recurring shock load or "hammer blow." There is no pulley made which can be, and which is, balanced with the degree of accuracy which obtains in the case of the Dodge Iron Center Wood Rim Pulley. It in variably represents a conservative investment. I Dodge Branch Warehouses in the United States And now, in 1917, we announce the further addition of the steel type of split pulley as the final justification of the Dodge Slogan, "A Perfect Pulley for Every Place Oneida Steel Type Keystone Steel Type Our final satisfaction in this announcement is two-fold; first, in being the only pulley manufacturer in the entire world who may offer, without prejudice, the proper type of pulley for the work in hand; and, second, in the .knowledge that we are furnishing, in every case, the highest development of pulley construction, whether of wood, iron or steel. , Dodge Hangers and Bearings It is generally understood that a hanger must act In the capacity of an anvil, to absorb the shocks and blows of shaft vibra tion. Sufficient strength is essential. - In the Dodge line of adjustable ball and socket hangers there Is strength, durability and interchangeability. Dodge hangers of the drop, post and bracket type are carried in stock by all Dodge dealers. It was possible during the tremen dous increase of industrial equipment during 1916 to 6hip Dodgehangers in thousand lots of a single size out of stock. Dodge Self-Oiling Bearings, either capillary or ring type, need no introduction to factory owners. Their dependability and efficiency are so well recognized throughout the entire indus trial field that their specification is practically universal as the most reliable "roadbed for power." Dodge Solid and Split Friction Clutches Dodge Friction Clutches, as the means of independent control over machines, groups of machines, countershafts or ' q main drivers, are in use in every important orancn oi lnaus- it . 1.1 y. in e lacwr tor economy ana saiety, tnere la no 5. J Ruhsrltnte. Dodge Clutches are made for all kinds of service, for light or heavy loads, or for slow or high epeeds. These clutches are separ ate and distinct mechanisms in themselves, and are not in any way a part of the pulley, sheave, gear or sprocket which may be used in connection ,with them. Dodge Clutches are manufactured in stock sizes from 10 inches to 72 inches, with respective horsepower ratings of from 6 to 1500, always assuming that such a rating is sufficient under the capacity of' the clutch to allow fr an ample margin of safety. Dodge Rope Drives are now univer sally employed because of their wide adaptability for an unusual range of service conditions. As a method of power transmission the American system of transmission devised by Mr. Wallace H. Dodge and Mr. W. B. Hosford offers: First : As against belt drives in gen eral, an appreciable saving in first cost of installation. Second: An additional saving in depreciation of equipment. In belt drives the most expensive part of the installation is the belt itself, which Is also, the portion upon which the most wear occurs. Rope is the least ex pensive factor in the Dodge System of Power Transmission and therefore replaced at considerably less cost. Third : An advantage in the quick picking up of power, the grip of the continuous rope wrapped round and round the laboring sheaves being equivalent to that of the mooring rope around a capstan. Fourth: An unlimited capacity for turning corners, passing over or around obstructions, communicating power to isolated buildings, or trans mitting energy from the platform of a grain elevator, let us say, straight to the roof. Fifth: Contrasted with electrical transmission, less than a quarter of the first cost, often less than a tenth ; less cost for maintenance ; and a sys tem that the unskilled millwright can master in a day. Dodge Rope Drives are installed throughout the world, principally in the establishments of those manufacturers who are seeking the most efficient method of the transportation of power between the driving force and the ' driven mechanism. Only in the Dodge line the power user may find "Every thing for the mechanical transmission of power." All are products worthy of the name "Dodge"; by the performance of each we are ready to stand or fall, according to our recommendation for their use. ' Dodge Service is country-wide; with Branch Warehouses and Sales Agencies in every important city of America, the buyer of transmission equipment is assured of prompt and efficient service. Further completeness of the Dodg6 Line must come, eventually and inevit ably; such additional progress is entirely dependent upon the further perfection of men and metals, and not upon our deter mination to so serve the interests of in dustry at large that you may feel justi fied, and, in a measure, obliged to specify Dodge Products for all exacting power transmission requirements. Bt communicating with the main office at Mishawaka. Indiana, you may receive, without further obligation, any one or more of the three books. Illustrated, or you may be placed tipon the mailing list of The Dodge Idea, a Magazine of Industrial Progress, circulated monthly to more than 82,000 readers.
