THE SUNDAY OREGOXIAN, PORTLAND, FEBRUARY 18, 1917. PENITENTIAL SEASON OF LENT BEGINS NEXT WEDNESDAY Last Drive to Be Made Today for Contributing: Oregon's Share of $5,000,000 Fund for Pensioning; Episcopal Clergymen as They Become Superannuated. 10 LENT will begin next "Wednesday and the period of fasting and self sacrifice will be observed by a large percentage of Portland church goers. From -Ash Wednesday -until Easter Sunday. April 8, special services for the penitential season will be held In all Roman Catholic and Episcopal churches. Today the Episcopalians will make their bigr plea for donations to the clergy pension fund. Oregon is supposed to raise $17,000 of the $5,000,000 fund. This morning the clergy will preach special sermons in their own churches, with offerings from the Sunday schools and all services to be devoted to the diocesan fund. In the evening will be the final mass meeting at Trinity Church. All Episco pal choirs In the city are asked to be present and participate in the service, and all the clergy and the laity. "Let every one come and do his share toward bringing to successful completion the greatest undertaking In the history of the American church the raising of the $5,000,000 pension fund." is the in vitation. The Clericus- has already pledged $500 and may give more. Bishop Lawrence, of Massachusetts, has announced that $4,000,000 is already pledged. He is general chairman of the pension fund. Following Is the bish op's message: "Quinquagesima Sunday will be the big pension fund day, not only In Ore gon, but throughout the church of the country. A collection will be taken up In all the churches from coast to coast. No one knows what the total of that collection will be. Whether small or large, the church Is urged to keep this fact in mind every ounce of strength, every emotion of generosity, must get Into play to bring the personal gifts and the general contribution up to the &. 000, 000 with such buoyancy that the flood will sweep over the bar. The higher the tidal wave, the stronger the pension system will be. "Tie last dollar given can be as well used as the first dollar. "May Oregon be Imbued with the magnificent spirit by giving that fills the church at large." a. e In Christian Endeavor circles the young people have been greatly inter ested In their state conventions at La Grande and Salem. The latter is still In progress. e e The laymen's missionary meetings this past week were of universal inter est and inspiration. Good of Prayer to Be Topic of Sermon Tonight. Dr. Lather It.
