The bill provides 126.000 a year ror two years, find that the money shall be used for the advertising of the scenic and In dustrial resources of the state. It Is an effort to obtain for Oregon end the Northwest a substantial por tion of the J700.000.000 that Ameri cans spend every Summer for their vacations. The movement is timed to begin with the removal of the $17.50 differ ential railroad fare between California points and the Northwest, and is an eured of the co-operation of every di vision of the railroad organizations. Committee Declared Favorable. It Is reported from the state capltol that the ways and mean committee of the House of Representatives and a large majority of the members of that branch stand ready to put the appro priation bill through at any time. The cam sources of information state a' large majority of the members of the Senate are ready to pass the bill whenever It comes from the hands of the ways and means committee of that body. They reoognlso that the appropriation will mean a large and profitable, new industry" for the State of Oregon, and that its importance is equal to that of those state institutions which have done so much for the de velopment of the state. In discussing the question with rep resentatives from all sections of the state, the Portland committee which has had much" to do with preparing the plans of the Northwest Tourist Asso ciation, declared its belief that the feeling of a large majority of the farmers of the state is in favor of the bill. R. B. Bcott reported in from Hood River that a careful canvass of all the farmers who could be reached in that section of the state showed a unani mous support for the bill. A strong in dorsement came from J. H. itoke, rep resenting the tourist association at Eugene. George Eclbird. editor of the Repub lican at Union, confirms the others who were communicated with, and says that his section of the state will not be pleased if the appropriation is denied. A majority of the members "of the Commercial Club at Klamath Falls are farmers, and the club unanimously in dorsed the bill at a special meeting. Grants Pass Club for BUU The Grants Pass Commercial Cldb, at the home of Dr. J. C. Smith, another member of the Senate ways and means committee, has advised their Senator that they indorse the measure. Commercial clubs and chambers of commerce at Marshfield. North Bend, Astoria, The Dalles, forest Grove. Dallas, Salem, Eugene, Albany, Oregon City. Silverton. Pendleton, La Grande and Baker, have expressed the desire to have the bill made a law. Last night the members of the board of directors for the Oregon division of the Northwest Tourist Association is sued a statement concerning what the association will not do and what It will try to do. "The appropriation asked of the Legislature la intended to be used entirely for advertising purposes," reads the statement. "The money will be pooled with a similar sum from the State of Wash ington and a sum of (12,500. a year from British Columbia. "It is then planned to combine the big scenic attractions of the Northwest and advertise them as one tour. "The advertising campaign will be National in character, use elng made of the magazines,, periodicals and newspapers of National circulation to present the announcements to the pub lic. "The advertisements will direct In quirers to a Chicago office for the as sociation, where a man will be sta tioned. Second' Ulan Needed, "Then there will have to be a North west office in charge of a man who can pei out advertising matter and plan the general movement. He will have to have a salary and some assistants. "But such salaries as are paid will not come out of the funds appropriated by the Legislature. Those expenses are expected to be made up from other sources. "Oregon's Interest In the expenditure of the appropriation Is to be looked after by two members of a finance committee who will be appointed by the Governor, and who serve without salary. "Our investigations convince that the tourist business can be made to bring millions of dollars to the people of this state. We have glveh our time and spent our own money getting the men of the Northwest to unite oni this plan, and to work out its details. "We now offer it to the people of Oregon to do with as they wllL "It will be a pity to see it fall when a strong effort on the part of every citizen would force- the matter to the favorable attention of the Legislature.
