cial.) Why the Oregon Normal
School exists and is located in
Monmouth, is due. many believe, to the
clever work of Monmouth and Polk
County men in the dawning years of
the "80s. These men first surveyed the
equipment here and then persuaded the
state of Oregon to accept a fine campus
.and buildings as a lft and use them In
starting a normal school. But the
quest for the reason wny goes farther
back than that. Had not the plans of
the piunecr group of seven material
ized, bad not the devoted men. bent
on the establishment of an educational
Institution, donated land for the cam
pus, had not they given money to start
the wheel moving, on what basis could
the promoters have laid claims for a
ctate normal school?
The story is simple: The pioneers
first chose a central location in the val
ley. Then they sc to work to found
an institution of learning to meet the
timely needs of the early people. They
fixed the campus, erected the buildings
and planted the trees. School was be
gun. The pioneers accomplished their
