SEA VIEW MUSICAU3 IS SUCCESS
Delightful Affair Given for Benefit
of Guardsmen.
SEA VIEW, Wash., Aug. 12. (Spe
cial.) Whether at home or abroad,
Portland folk remember the soldier
boys at the border and their families.
For this purpose a large and elaborate
musicale was given Thursday night at
Hackney cottage here and it was one
of the most successful and delightful
affairs ever given at this beach. The
list of patronesses, including prom
inent Portland matrons, assured suc
cess for the venture, as well as the un
tiring efforts of the group of young
women who took the affair in charge.
Professional talent, which demands
high prices In Portland, entered into
the spirit of the occasion, and gave
freely of their gifts for the needy of
"our boys" serving Uncle Sam on the
Mexican border.
The grounds surrounding the cot
tage were charming and resembled a
Japanese tea garden; tiny electric
lights, encased in Japanese lanterns,
were strung through the trees and
flowering shrubs, and the lawn was
canvased for the interpretative danca,
"The Herd Girl's Dream," given Dy
Miss Julie Murphy in costume. It was
quite the feature of the programme.
Mr. and Mrs. George Hotchkiss Street,
who are summering here, also assisted
in making the event delightful, and the
candy booth proved a great attraction
as well as being very profitable.
Miss Hildreth Humason, who Is at
Tioga for the Summer with her fam
ily, scored a big hit with a dr&matv:
reading, and Miss Mary Holmes' piano
solos were enthusiastically encored.

Episcopal Church Fair Attracts At
tention at Long Beach.
LONG BEACH. Wash., Aug. 12.
(Special.) The entire week has been
given up to plans and preparations for
the annual bazaar for the benefit of
the Episcopal Church given Thursday
at the restroom under the auspices of
the Aid Society. This year's fair was
even a greater success than the pre
vious one, and the women of Long
Beach and surrounding towns were well
paid lor their efforts.
Mrs. T. Murdoch, president of the
society, was assisted by a number of
the women residents and many visitors
summering here. Mrs. Ralph Posrue
was in charge of the booths for fancy
work, Mrs. Lyniff presided at the punch
taoie, assisted by Mrs. Bertha Jensen.
Miss Helma Jacobsen was in charee
of the tea which was served during
tne aiternoon and was assisted by
number of girls,- many "of whom are
from Portland, summering here.
A "good eats" booth, in which de
llcious foodstuffs were attractivelv dis

by the various members of the society
and residents here, was in charge of (

selections. A number of vocal solos were
also given by prominent Portland folk,
and other instrumental numbers made
the afternoon a most pleasing one.
The restroom was attractively decked
for the "occasion and the booths erected
were adorned with, yellow and white
garlands and pennants. The restroom
is becoming more and more popular and
necessary to patrons of this beach.
It is an ideal place to run in and read,
write a letter In a hurry, visit one's
friends and look up acquaintances in
the register. The register assists many
a Summer visitor to find friends with
whom they have not been in touch
with for a long time.
Driftwood, which is mora attractive
this year than ever, with its vivid
hued flowers and unique interior,
houses many a happy gathering. Per
sons visiting this section of the coast
run In for a meal, merely to see the
charming old place, where everything

(Special.) A tremendous gathering of
excursionists assembled at North Beach
on Thursday from various parts of
Idaho. More than 100 persona enjoyed
the excursion to the coast and they
scattered all over the beach all the
way from Long Beach up to Ilwaco in
cottages, hotels and boarding-houses.
The special train was made up of two
tourist, four standard sleepers, as well
as the diner and other cars necessary
to make the trio comfortable.

Shepherd and Jack Stubbs are learning
the mysteries of housekeeping in
cottage above here, where they are

The Case cottage houses Mrs. Rich
