SUMMER SCHOOL FOR CLERGY IS INNOVATION IN DIOCESE Noted Episcopalian Leaders to Participate in Sessions Scheduled for St. Helens Hall, June 27 to 30 Other Religious Meetings Command Attention of Various Churches. lO AN event of more than ordinary in terest will be the Clergy Sum mer school arranged by the be held in St. Helen's Hall, June 27 to 30. The holding of this Summer school will be an innovation for Portland. To show Just how important the event will be, one need but note the promi nence of the men who are to be of the faculty. Dr. Francis J. Hall, professor of divinity in the General Theological Seminary of New York; Dr. H. G. Green, of Seattle, and Rt. Rev. Her man Page, D. D., Bishop of Spokane, will be among those who will partici pate. Not only is Dr. Hall a profes sor of dogmatic theology but he is known as a great writer and lecturer. Dr. Gowen is a member of the faculty of the University of Washington, and Bishop Page is acknowledged as ar authority on Sunday schools and methods. The school will open on Tuesday. June 27, at 7:30 o'clock with an address of welcome by Bishop "Walter T. Sum ner. Dr. Gowen will lecture on "The Psalter." The last session on Friday, June 30. at 7:30 o'clock, will be held in St. Stephen's pro-Cathedral. This meeting will be open to all. On this occasion there will be afforded an opportunity to hear Dr. Hall in his noted address The Road to Unity." The Rev. Dr. Hall, of the General Seminary, New York City, will conduct a Quiet Day for the women . of the diocese, under the auspices of the Woman's Auxiliary, in the pro-Cathedral, Monday. July 3, beginning at 9 o'clock and lasting all day. There will be four instructions. Llunch will be served. Further information can be obtained by telephoning Mrs. Scad ding or the bishop's secretary. The big gathering of Presbyterian young people to be held, in Orenco, June 20-22, will be an attraction for this week. Many speakers of promi nence will assist in making the pro gramme especially interesting. Rev. Ernest F. Hall, of San Francisco, will be a leading speaker. Chaplain Gil bert, of Astoria, will come up for the meetings. Nearly all the local pastors will attend. Rev. H. G. Hanson is chairman of the committee, of ar rangements. , Many Portlanders will be interested In the annual conference of tlje Young Women's Christian Associations of the Northwest to be held in Seabeck. June 23 to July 3. Special rates will be made by the transportation companies for a delegation that will leave Port land on June 22. ' In the First Christian Church, Park and Columbia streets, Mrs. Clara G. Ksson, the State Bible School evange list for the Christian Churches of Ore gon, will occupy the pulpit this morn ing and tonight. Mrs. Esson is well known, and is held in high esteem for herself, us well as for her work. All those interested in Bible school work are extended a cordial invitation to bear her. At the morning service the quartet will sing, "When Morning Dawns" C. Bohm), and Mrs. Wilson will sing . a contralto solo "Peace and Rest" tRobert Barten). In the evening the anthem will be "The King of Love My Shephard Is" (Sheldey). There also will be a tenor solo "Jesus, Lover of My Soul" (Rath- burn), sung by Mr. Mallett, Conference to Be Held at Orenco June 20-22. Presbyterian Tannic People Prepare for IntereMtlng Sevaion. THE first Annual Conference for Presbyterian, young people will be held at Orenco, June 20-22. The open ing service will be on Tuesday even ing at 7:30 V. M., with two addresses, one by Dr. H. N. Mount, on "The Re lation of Education to Religion," and the other by Dr. J. H. Boyd, on "Man's Need of a Soul." On Wednesday and Thursday there will be five 40-min-ute periods during which time ex perts in their line will lecture or lead discussions of various themes of spir itual interest, with special applica tion of the work of young people. Rev. George Dunlap, of the Philippines, will be one of the speakers from a dis tance. The delegates are planning to live in tents like the Israelites of old. A great community table in the basement of the Presbyterian Church will pro Vide meals. In the afternoon athletic contests of various types will be held. This part of the programme is in charge of Professor F. B. Guthrie. Superin tendent of the Estacada Schools. The musical side of the convention will be aided by Rev. C. F. Aue, of Spring water, violinist. Most of the delegates will go to Orenco by train on Tuesday arte noon and camp right through. Others will go out by automobile each morning. Still others are planning to "hike" to the conference. It is hoped that 100 young people will be present. Rev. H. G. Hanson, pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church, is making the arrangements. Children's Day Service la Enjoyed. Larue Attendance at Lincoln Meth odist Episcopal Church for Fea ture A LARGE, enthusiastic assemblage enjoyed the Children's tlay pro gramme at the Lincoln Methodist Epis topal Church, corner Fifty-second and Kast Lincoln streets, last Sunday. The church was tastefully decorated with roses. Two canary birds added novelty and charm to the entertain ment. The programme passed off with out a hitch and the high standard of the children's programmes of this school was maintained. Miss Gertrude Espey and Jay Oliver trained the children. The violin solo of little Francis Oraff was a pleasant surprise. He is only 8 years old. but he captivated the audi ence with his splendid playing. The pastor. Dr. G. Haley, closed the programme with a short address on "The Power of Childhood Influences." A. D. Doane is superintendent of this live Sunday school. Plans are under way to observe the COth anniversary of Centenary Meth odist Church. Special services will be held on this occasion, which will be in the near future. Todav Dr. Lane will speak on Christian Efforts and Inspiration." Tonight the subject will be, "What Is Religion?" On Tuesday evening, the members of the Brotherhood of St. James' Lu theran Church and their wives sur prised Mr. and Mrs. A L. Anderson, at their home, 920 Woodward avenue. The occasion was the fiftieth birth day of Mr. Anderson. A social evening was enjoyed and a short musical pro gramme was rendered. Rev. J. H. Barnett will conduct serv ice in the St. Johns Congregational Church and preach in the morning at 1 1 o'clock and the evening at 8. Mr. Leas has arranged for three practical discourses leading up to Communion, on July 2, choosing the following subjects: The Church Teaching, or Catech izatton; "The Lord's Supper." and "Preparation for the Lord's Supper." The purpose of these discourses is to set forth in a simple way the teachings of the church for the bene fit of those recently received into the congregation. Tonight a male quartet will sing. At the Rose City Park Community Church, at East Forty-fifth and Han cock streets, the annual children's day services will be conducted at 11 o'clock. Harriet Hale Rix, well known here and in England, as an advanced teacher in metaphysics, will be in Portland this week to deliver two lectures. The first talk has been arranged by Mrs. Florence Crawford and will be given in the com forter headquarters, Women's Exchange building, 186 Fifth street, corner Yam hill, at 8 o'clock Tuesday night. Miss Rix will give her second lecture Wednesday night at 8 o'clock in Eiler's Hall, Broadway and Alder street. This lecture has been arranged by Mrs. Ann Young Huntress, of the New Thought Temple of Truth. Miss Rix, who ministers at the Alameda Home of Truth, is a sister of Mrs. Annie Rix Militz, editor of "Master Mind." She is also the author of "Christian Mind Healing." . Both Miss Rix and Mrs. Militz are well known in Portland. Dr. Claibourn Hill, President of Berkeley College, will preach at the White Temple at both services and the Temple Quartet will sing, "Something for Thee" (Wolcott), "I am Alpha and Omega" (Stainer), "There is Best for You" (Havens) and "Eternity" (Mer cadante). Ir. Hill is a forceful speaker as well as a successful educator. Church Societies Will Ad journ for Summer. Dyott will speak on the theme, "The Mission of God's Optimist," at 11 A. M., and in the evening "The Right Attitude To ward the Question of Preparedness." There will be special music at both services. Preceding the morning serv ice, Fred Brainerd, organist, will render Engelmann's "Song Without Words" and Tschaikowsky's "Barcarolle." As a prelude, Mr. Brainerd will give "An dante" by Volckmar. Until the Fall work is resumed many of the societies and organizations ot the First Congregational Church are holding their final meeting this month. The Silver Circle met at the home of Mrs. H. H. Northup, 599 Elizabetn street, on Thursday afternoon. Mrs. Seneca Smith assisted Mrs. Northup as hostess. Following a business meeting the afternoon was spent socially. The Christian Endeavor Society gave a moonlight picnic in Macleay Park Friday night. Many of the young peo- I pie of the church and their friends joined in making this a happy fare well event. The young people in this society will not conduct the regular Sunday evening services after this month, though they anticipate being active in their social service work dur ing the Summer months. The Woman's League will give a picnic at the home of Miss Anna Pal mer next Tuesday afternoon. Many friends of members of this organization have been invited to join in their pic nic. This will also close the meetings for this society during the Summer. "The Grounds of Christian Confi dence" is the subject of Dr. John H. Boyd's morning Bermon at the First Presbyterian Church at 10:30 o'clock. This will be a message to the tired and confused. Mrs. Jane Burns Albert will sing in solo Merrit's arrangement of the beautiful hymn. "O for a Closer Walk With God." At 7:4 5 P. M. Dr. Boyd will preach on "Spiritual Hy giene," or "How to Have a Healthy Soul." The musical programme will include two solos, tenor with quartet. "Glory to Thee, O God," by Siever, sung by W. A. Erwin, and baritone solo. "1 Do Not Ask, O Lord," by Spross, sung by Dom J. Zan. Mrs. Mary Hanford Ford will speak at room 606 Filers building tonight at 8 o'clot-k, on "The Oriarin of the Soul."
