HTHE Western man is more
liberal in his interpreta
tion and following of fashion
than his brother of the East, but
none the less quick to adhere
to its rulings in their broad ap
plication, ivhilejie still main
tains his own inalienable right
to inject his personal tastes and
comfort, within reasonable
bounds, into his allegiance to
fashions decree.

For this reason it is held by
many that the Western man has
a far freer field than the East
erner, while still moving in pace
with the procession of correct
ness in dress.
Scores of show windows in
Portland will attest to the general
soundness of these principles to
day, with their displays for the
Spring Style Exhibit in mens
apparel, and will demonstrate
to the men of the city that the
retail merchants' bureau of the
Chamber of Commerce was
-right in its declaration of the
principle that Portland's retail
accommodations arte such that
there is no need for any man to
look elsewhere in making his
purchases.
Generally, the outstanding
points in men's fashions for this
Spring have been outlined as
follows:
Yo'ung, smartly dressed men
will tend to the one or two-button
sack suit with patch pockets
or diagonal flap pockets. Con
servative dressers will tend to
the two or three-button sack
with soft roll lapel and rather
permanent frock coat.
Coats and trousers are much
closer than heretofore, the pre
vailing tendency being toward
' the English models. Overcoats
incline to be fitted, the
loose coat being princi- "
pally for motoring and
outing.
