to take exception to the misstatements
concerning; the robin sent to The Ore-
gronlan by a correspondent at isruwns
villa. The benighted man has observed the
robin eat a amall amount of fruit and
at nnre Jumps to the conclusion that
cultivated fruit is all the robin feeds
on. 'except a few anicle worms which It
teala from his chickens.
It Is my wih. in addition to some of
my own observations, to contribute, a
few paraKraphs of authoritative data
by orintholOKists of prominence, which
will free the robin from such false
eharg-ra as made by the Brownsville
correspondent. The following: para
graphs axe excerpts from "The Ameri
can Thrushes. Valuable Bird Neigh
bors." by F. E. L. Brals, of the United
States Biolog-ical Survey, published
In the Department of Agriculture year
book for 1913. It concerns the robin
as being; the most prominent of the
thrush family:
While all th thrushes like berries and
fruit, they ara fonder of animal food. They
ara especially partial to beetles, and these
make up about ens-fifth of their animal
diet.

Practically all caterpillars ar harmful,

Thrushes sra nearly unanimous In their fond
ness for this soft. Juicy article of diet, and
in quantities It makes up aOout one-tenth of
their entire bill of (are.
In general, the thrushes as a group do
littl Injury to th fruit crop. These birds
vistt vimpi and brush In preference to or
chards and gardens when looking for fruit,
and berries. In some place where cities are
built up. tha thrush is compelled to go to
orchards for Its vegetable diet, ag there ar
no wild harries. Under ordinary conditions
of country life wild fruits are so abundant
that thrushes seldom trespars upon culti
vated varieties.
William, R. Lord In "Birds of Oreg-on
and Washing-ton," says:
Tha robin la a "common bird." -iut he Is
Ilk children, not to b despised on that
account. Tha farmsrs sometimes hate him
and kill blm ss an enemy, being; unwilling
to allow hire the comparatively small pay
he asks for tha unmeasured good he does
them in the quantities of harmful worms ha
devours. A pair of robins sometimes tak
more than 100 cutworms in the course of a
day for themselves and their younc.
In all of -my own experience I have
never known a robin to feed on apples
until forced to do bo by' lack .of other
food, late in the Fall, when all desir
able fruit has been long- picked. He
shows no liking; whatever for sour
fruits such aa blackberries, but occa
sionally helps, himself to a few cher
ries, strawberries and other aweet
fruit, the value of which he earns
many fold by his wholesale destruc
tlon of noxious insects.
The value of the thrushes has been
well emphasized by the result in cer
tain regions of California where the
thruchrs were killed off as grame. in
these places harmful insects multiplied
so rapidly that small fruit raising was
impossible without a continual fight
with sprays, poisons and other means
of extermination; all of which are un
necessary here.
From the economic aspect alone, not
considering- his cheering" sonpr and
beautiful appearance, we could ill af
ford to be without th robin.

and the Union, as agreed upon by the

formally voted to affiliate with the
Oregon Farmers' League, as the federa
tion was named, and the Yamhill
county council of the Uague has elect

for the dairy exhibits, $25 of which
roei to the owner of the five best
dairy cows In the Myrtle Point sec
tion, and $25 to the person who shows
the best yield of corn on one acre.
The year 1915 demonstrated surpris
ing things In corn culture, and half a
dozen contests held during that sea
son brought out some excellent exhib

as 1915 income.
Mr. Sweek holds that the law pro
vides that unless the grain crop is sold
In th same year in which it is pro
duced the expenses of production may
not b deducted from the amount te
celved from that crop and the farmer
must pay the tax on the whole amount

Klamath A very successful meeting was

Association. Prorpects are good for forming
two more clubs for the same purpose this
month.

meetings throughout the county during the
nest week or two, for the purpose of re
organizing our testing associations for a

rive February 2 to assist me with tho work.

Malnerr This week was mostly spent on
rahbii. project work. I had to travel by
trcln and team and by horseback into a
snow-bound country. I found tho farmera
had been making wire netting traps of their
stockyards and poisoning with grain, whlcn
did not, however, work as well as the pois
oned hay. With tha traps, poison and drives
thoy have about cleaned this section of
rabbits, showing, that it ran be done. I
dlrtrlbuted some poison to be used with hay,
after gaining some knowledge about the use
of the stockyards as traps. They kill the
rabbits and throw them into piles, and
there were several wagon losds around some
of the stacks. The mow went off down
her tn ,h valley after I had put out on
lot o: poison. Tt was an experiment that
give good reaults for jth a lot f fifteen
ounces In one place, 710 rabbits wer found
dead and In another i :aca 200 were found.
They could not all . found In the sage
brush and snow tlint fell the night follow
ing I hava not heard yet the results of
the test of the poison. I attended the
Pomona Grange, and made my report on
the corn show, and outlined my proposed
work for next year. It was a very bad day
and the crowd was not ag large as expected.

UNIVERSITY OF OREGON. Eugene,
Feb. 12. (Special.) Twenty-three stu
dents who entered the university this
week as the beginning of the second
semester are pledged to the Greek let
ter fraternities and sororities on the
campus. The rushing week has been
active.
Five sororities found no students as
members, and pledges for the week in
clude six fraternities.
The whole number of students to en
roll this week was 66 as against 74 at
the same time last year. The various
houses have been watchful for new
members and take advantage of the
opening of new courses and tne Degin
ning of a new semester.

After Several Victories.
NORTH BEND, Or., Feb. 12. (Spe
cial.) North Bend's High School de
bating team is in line for another
championship, having won the Coos
County honors in two debates in which
the cities of JIarshfield, Myrtle Foint.
Coquille and Bandon were their op
ponents.
The finals were held in Myrtle Point
and this city, each school having a neg
ative and affirmative team of two
orators. North Bend won all six points
in the finals. The local debaters in
cluded' Randall Jones and Merlin Chap
pell, Alex Brandt and Horace yler.
aThe team has yet to meet the cham
pion debaters of tha high schools in
Southern Oiegon, who will come from
Koseburg, Giants Pass, Medford or
Ashland.
North Bend won the state champion
ship in 1913. when Miss Norma Chase
and Lyle Chappell defeated the Spring
field High School team at Springfield.
Mrs. Jj. Gllbride, of Metzger, Dies.

Mrs. Iaouis Gilbride, of this place, died
at St. Vincent Hospital last Sunday.
She is survived by her husband, a
Jeweler of Yamhill street, Portland,
and six children, all girls, the eldest
being only 10 years old. The infant ia
not expected to live.
