Such an arrangement, it Is be lieved, will do much toward solvtns; th financial loss confronting- th Washington Water Power Company anil th Spokane Traction Company la the operation of these street railways. Kecently before the City Council. D. L. Hunting-, president of th Washing ton Water Power Company, said that the company's street railway business was being conducted at a loss, ana b expressed th opinion that th sama was true of tha Spokane Traction Com. sany. Two factors have been making serl ous Inroads Into th business of th street railway companies. One Is the Increasing number of pclvately-owned automobiles, whose owners formerly patronized the streetcars. Another Is tha Jitney bus - The amalgamation of the two sys tems has been suggested frequently, but th absorption of one system by the other has not proved practicable, It Is declared. By the organization of a holding company to take over both street railway properties, a mora eco nomlcal operation of the street rail ways la made possible.
