Tbe Civic League began the New Tear yesterday, at iia meeting at the Multnomah Hotel by taking stock of itself and its activities. F. S. Myers, the new president, waa the principal speaker, and other officers of the league gave short talks in whicn they set fortb their opinions of the organiza tion and its needs for the coming year. Frank Branch Riley waited upon the meeting in behalf of the Chamber of Commerce and outlined the plana for Letter-writing week, urging the mem berahlp of the league to give all pos sible assistance in the movement. Recently the representatives of a ' Portland canning firm and of a half million dollar syrup and preserving company of California made arrange ments with S. L. Brown, manager of the Pacific Storage Company, to lease- the four-story and basement reinforced concrete building located on the corner of East First and East Madison streets--. for a 10-year period at an averagev rental of I48G a month The building was to be used as a factory for the bottling of preserved ' Royal Ann and other Oregon cherries on a large scale The company was' capitalized at $50,000 and between 250 ' and 300 workers were to be employed.
