ROAD SURVEYS GO ON STATE HIGH WAT WORKERS Kf DOUGLAS PROGRESS BAPIDLT. Csnplett. f Taak la Expected In Tkre MoBtke .PersnaBeacy Will Be Feature-la Future. ROsJEBCRG. Or., Dec. IS. (Special.) The two parties of engineers that are working on a 6 per cent grade for the Improved state highway through Doug las County are making rapid progress. It Is believed that they will meet here within the next three months. The surveys have been along tho old Pacific Highway most of the way. but wherever possible the heavy grades have been avoided. In many instances It was found necessary to construct a new section of rood. The crew from the north has been making tbe faster progress, because or the rewer actual change, ln construction. In the aoutbern part of tho county, tho engineers had to lay out the road from the county line over considerable new jrround. The crew in aouthern Douglas County is camped near Can yonville. In the new road, all railroad cross ings have been eliminated. The party from the north avoided aa much rouph country as was encoun tered by tho crew ln the southern part of the county. E. F. Cantlne. assistant state highway engineer, passed last night here conferring with th. men ln charge of the two surveying crews. Dousrlas County has more of tho Pa cific Hl.Thway than any county in the state and the cos-t of keeping the road in good condition Is enormous. Here after U road work In this county will be of a permanent nature, which will not only mean a saving to the taxpay er of the county, ut will render serv iceable roads at all times of the year.
