Detectives Pat Moloney and Tom Swennea took tho matter In charge. Lovald told them that he waa a painter and bad been living at 111 Ninth street. Further, he aald that he had lived In Portland nine years, but that he had always been, honest and had now been driven to the theft of food by actual starvation. He looked as though he spoke the truth. Bis face waa wan and pinched, his form wasted aa though from lack of nourishing food. To make a long story short, ho won the sympathy of the detectives. Detec tive Swennes took up collection among the other officers for the man. Patrolman White refused to prosecute. Municipal Judge Stevenson dismissed the case. Detective Tom Hammersley gave the man his card and told him that he would be given a month's board and lodging free at Hammersley Court apartments. Professor Sperlin showed from his address that the personal reminiscences of all .the white traders among the In dians of the Northwest were that the Indians had almost invariably been ex tremely friendly to th whites until they had been given cause for enmity. Mackenzie, and many others. Ashland Makes Electric Contract. ASHLAND, Or.. Dec. 18. (Special.) By the terms of a contract between this city and the California-Oregon Power Company, the municipality pays a nominal rental of II a year for use of the pole and wire lines of the old Ashland Electric Power & Light Com pany, and then pays a flat rate for current to the outside corporation of 1 cent a kilowatt hour for either light or power. The city does the entire distributing on schedules aa may here after be fixed. For heating purposes specifically, the city will pay 3 J-10 mills a kilowatt hour. The contract Is for three years, beginning- January 1, 1016. In the meantime the ABhland Electric Light & Power Company will vacate the loaal field. Wlnlock Wins Debate From Kelso. ' KELSO, Wash.. Armstrong at a public meeting Friday night. Hereafter the schoolhouse will have over its front the conspicuous sign in large silver leters. "Standard." The Powell Valley School has met all the requirements for standardization, an honor which la sought by all the schools of the county. Powell Valley Is the sixth school that has been officially standardized by the superintendent, and 20 more will re ceive the honor by February 1.
