The relinquishment of command by Villa has been rumored at the border for several weeks, but the first Indi cation of Jt cam today in the removal of the household goods of General Villa to El Paso, following the sud den appearance of Mrs. Villa at the border from Chihuahua late last night. The good of Colonel Hipolite Villa, financial agent of the convention gov ernment at Juarez, were next reported coming across the International bridge. Later the wives of the brother reached El Paso and It was said that Colonel Hlpolito Villa was expected to arrive shortly and that General Villa would reach the border tonight or to morrow morning. rbleftalas' Families Take Flight. An exodus of Villa chieftains' fami lies occurred at the border during the afternoon, while the word had been given In Juares "officers, take care of yourselves," and resulted in a scurrying of officers In bewilderment. Several clambered on trains going south with supplies to the army and they were followed by some of their men. Shortly afterward rifle and equipment appeared from hiding places and were loaded into cars going to Chihuahua City. Among the families to cross tho bor der today with household good were thou of General Manuel Oachoa, com manding tho garrison of Juarez; Gen eral Fidel Avlla. governor of Chihua hua State. Cashier's Wife Sees Men Shoot at Husband and Open Safe to Get $150, Leaving $3000. i SEATTLE. Wash.. Dec. 18. Four men. firing shots in all directions, ap peared at 6:30 tonight before the Du vall State Bank, at "Duvall. King County, 30 miles east of Seattle, and, entering the bank, which had Just been opened for its Saturday night's busi ness, seized a sack containing! $450 in silver dollars. The. men fled up the Snoqualmle River, carrying the heavy bag of silver. C. Beadon Hall, cashier, and his wife were the only persons in the bank when the men entered. The cashier was forced to open the Bafe. the thieves shooting about his feet to make him hurry. The robbers overlooked, $3000 in gold which the safe contained. About a mile above town a posse came on one of the' robbers, who was taking silver dollars from a sack and placing them In his pocket. The rob ber fired at the posse whose leader threw a spotlight on the robber, direct ing tho aim of the other members of the posse, and the robber was riddled with bullets. He fell or jumped over th bank of the river into the swift mountain stream. 1 The posse recovered the money bag, which had 36S left In it, and then pressed on in pursuit of the other three robbers. It is believed that they have been surrounded in the woods bordering the stream. $400,000 JOB TO START i St. Johns Railway Tunnel Will Be Concrete Lined. Pending completion of improvements on the 0.-W R, ft N. Company's St. Johns tunnel, all trains operating over that line between Portland and Seattle will use the North Bank tracks be tween the Union Station and the North Portland Junction. The change is ef fective tomorrow. Contracts for improvements on the tunnel have Just been let. They call for a complete concrete lining from end to end. The work will cost approx imately $400,000 and will require about five months. WOOD F0RLEGS SCARCE Factory Compelled to Reject Order From European War Zone. ST. LOUTS, Dec. 18. The manufac ture of artificial legs for shipment to the European belligerents has been de layed by the scarcity of willow wood. Harry Dawson, a local manufacturer, said today that he could not get any more seasoned willow wood for several weeks and that for this reason he had delayed accepting a contract for more than 150 artificial legs a month. RELIC VALUED AT $7500 Congress Is Asked to Buy Suit Lin coln Was Shot In. WASHINGTON, Dec. 18. Congress has been asked to appropriate $7500 to buy the suit of clothes Abraham Lin coln wore the night of his assassina tion at Ford's Theater In 1S6J. Representative Roberts, of Massachu setts, has introduced a bill to acquire the relic, owned by a Washington busi ness man. for the Lincoln Memorial. GERMANS SUNK IN BALTIC Berlin Admits Cruiser Bremen and Torpedo-Boat Are Lost. AMSTERDAM, via London, Dec. 19. It has been officially announced in Ber lin that the small German cruiser Bremen and a torpedo-boat accompany ing her have been sunk by a submarine in the eastern Baltic Sea. The announcement said that a con siderable portion of the crews of both vessels were saved. "The police department Chicago is honeycombed with grafters who ar collecting money all over the city. The department will be cleaned up and the crooks routed out if it costs me my life." m This statement was made by Will iam Hale Thompscn, Mayor of Chi ccgo, during a conference today with Chief of Police Healey. condition and remedies in whose department wer under discussion. Police Captains to Be Warned. "Let police captains know that we mean business and that, unless they clean up and drive out the crooks, charges of Incompetence will be filed against them forthwith," said the Mayor to the Chief. In the course of the conference Mayor Thompson had made this fiat and un qualified statement: "Chief Healey and I are ccovlnced that there has been and is collusion be tween the police department and tho crooks of Chicago and that protection is being afforded to criminals. "As soon as we find out where that protection is coming from we are go ing to clean up the department, and it will, be such a clean-up as Chicago never before has seen." Folic Killing Each Other. Still earlier in the day. in an inter view. Mayor Thompson had laid an even graver charco against the police de partment as a whole. He intimated strongly that investigation might dis close the fact that Policeman John C. Burke, latest of Chicago policemen to be slain, was the victim of a plot hatch I within the department a plot to get rid of Burke because the latter was really trying to do his full duty and drlv out crooks. The Mayor intimated that investiga tion might reveal evidencu that other policemen had been victims of the same dastardly conspiracy. He hinted that revelations might come that would make the Rosenthal murder plot in New York pale Into insignificance. .Major 'a Orders Repeated. In obedience to the command of the Mayor. Chief Healey prepared a special order that went out to every command ing officer in the police department bonight. This order repeated in sub stance just what the Mayor told Chief Healey at the conference. "It may be poor politics," said the Mayor, "but I am honestly going to run this administration clean and without graft, whether I ever do another thing in my life, nd as for politics, that con sideration can go to Hades. vciiief Healey, I believe, has been making an honest effort to make the entire force honest. I purpose to back him up with all my energy in his ef forts. ' Mayor Say He Is Not Afraid.
