t'NXASIBD AMERICAN IN DANGER
IN MEDITERRANEAN.
S. O. Received in Athena Telia of
Attack, by Submarine Washing
ton Thinks It Not War Vessel.
ATHENS, Dec. 4. A wireless S. O. S.
call reached Athens early today from
an unnamed American ship, the mes
sage saying that she waa being at
tacked by an Austrian or a German
submarine south of the Island of
Crete.
WASHINGTON, Dec. 4. The Stat
Department late today had received no
official information regarding the re
ported attack on an American ship in
th Mediterranean.
Officials suggested that it probably
was one of a email fleet of merchant
vessels plying in Grecian waters un
der tha American flag-, but owned en
tirely by Greek capital.
It was said at the N'avy Department
.. ofiiitAr n Moines nrobablv
was nearer the scene of the reported
attacK man wa tae LiNr. duiu im

minor damaees yesterday in a severe
gale off Jaffa. The Caesar was to
proceed to the south, however, taking
..it.... to Alexandria while the Des
Moines was on her way to Cyprus un
der indefinite orders which might
take her to other Mediterranean
islands.
The disposition of Navy officials waa
to regard it as impossible that any
American warship had been attacked
either through accident or otherwise.
It is said by officials that an attack
on one of the Greek-owned vessels of
American registry might present a
rather difficult problem, but that it
waa highly Improbable that the United
States would feel justified in making
it an international issue.
