day the members will gatherto pay
their annual tribute of love and memory
to their departed brothers.
In keeping with thla observance the
members of Portland Lodge will con
duct their memorial services at the
First Presbyterian Church. Twelfth and
Alder streets, at X o'clock.
All Elks, -whether members of Port
land or some other lodge, have been
Invited to assemble in the Elks' Club
rooms. Stark street end Broadway, at
1:15 this afternoon. They will proceed.
In a body, to the church. The public
Is Invited to loin in th service.
Judge R. R. Butler, of The Dalles,
will deliver the memorial oration.
Judge Butler Is a member of the lodge
at Ueppner and Is one of the best
known lawyers and public speakers in
Eastern Oregon. Ho is a member of
the tate Senate.

Mr. and Mrs. Butler arrived In Port
land yesterday afternoon. They are
staying at the Imperial. Members of
the Portland lodge conducted them on
an automobile drive through the city
yesterday afternoon.
John C. McCue. of Portland, who Is
a past exalted ruler of the Astoria
lodge, will deliver the eulogies on those
members Wbo have passed away since
the last annual memorial was held.

Celebration Is in Commemoration
of Last War for Independence.
"Polish Day" will be celebrated in
Portland this afternoon at the Polish
Hall, 810 Maryland avenue, corner of
Failing street. In commemoration of
tbe last Polish war for independence,
which was called November 2. 1863.
The celebration is always set for the

Today is being recosnized in all Pol
ish communities throughout the world
as a day of commemoration and
takes on an added significance this
year on account of the distress now
existing in Poland as a result of the
European war.
A Polish tag day will be observed
some time this month, when funds will
be collected to alleviate the suffering
in Poland. Already a committee has
asked for contributions in money. Con
tributions should be sent to Father
Matuszewski, 822 Maryland avenue, or
to J. Yezerski, 69a East beventeenth
street south.
FIRE CAMPAIGN PRIZES SET
Deputy Marshals Getting Best Pre
vention Kesults to Be Kewarded.
To arouse interest in the fire pre.
vention campaign among the 105 fire
men who serve as deputy tire mar
shals. Fire Marshal Stevens announced
yesterday that one prize of S100 and
others of smaller amounts will be or
fered for the man getting tho best re
sults next vear.
The plan has been explained to the
firemen, and it is expected the compe
tltion will be lively. Tho prizes other
than the $100 have not been fixed yet.
If the City Council will not appropriate
the amounts It is proposed to raise
them by public subscription.

Services Will Be Began In Aagustana
Church and Will Be Coacladed
at Bollding.
The new Emanuel hospital, which
has just been completed at a cost of
53O.0U0, at the corner of Stanton and
Commercial streets, will be dedicated,
today at 8:30 o'clock. The esercisca
will begin in the Augustana Lutheran
Church, Stanton street and Rodney ave
nue, and will be concluded at the hos
pital site on Commercial street.
Rev. C. K. Swanson, of Seattle, presi
dent of the Columbia Lutheran Confer
ence, will be the principal speaker, al
though prominent Lutheran clergy and
laymen of Portland will ba on the pro
gramme. The new hospital will be ready for
occupancy in about a week. It takes
the place of the old Emanuel hospital
at 20S Tenth street, on the West Side,
which was established through the ef
forts of Rev. C. J. Renhard. formerly
of the Emanuel Church in 1911. The
new institution occupies a site 175 by
285 feet.
ALUMNI OF OREGON DINE
University Faculty Jlenibcrs Join in
Luncheon at Hazelwood.
In response to an appeal circulated
by the committee that arranged for tha
luncheon, 38 alumni and faculty mem
bers of tha University of Oregon yes
terday noon gathered at tbe Hazelwond
in their first monthly meeting, repeti
tions of which will occur the first Sat
urday of every month hereafter.
President P. L. Campbell, of the Uni
versity of Oregon, was the principal
speaker. John C. Veatch was chairman
of the programme. Other speakers
were Fletcher Linn and H. B. Miller.
Music was furnished by a quartet com
posed of Delbert Stannard, '14; Earl
Fortmiller, '14; Francis D. Curtis, '11,
and Willard Shaver, '14.

Agriculturist Is Denied Douglas.

The County Court today denied the
petitions of several hundred farmers
for the employment of a county agri
culturist. An appropriation of J1600
a year was sought to maintain the
office. The request was dented on tne
grounds that the budget of expendi
tures for the ensuing year already had
been passed upon by the Court.
