To the. People
I am at the end of a fifty-four-year stretch in the struggle for business. The old energy, the old,
ability to carry a tremendous load of worry and care have left me. I am an old man and I can't carry the
burden longer. That is why I am sacrificing my $150,000 stock of Diamonds and Jewelry!
Can anyone point -to a single transaction in all the 54 years that I have been doing business here that
is questionable? Can anyone say that they ever bought any article from my firm that was not even better
than we represented it? Can any say that this half-century-old firm has, by even hint or inference,
ever tried to mislead a customer?
' Maybe our reputation has helped me in this, my last appeal for your business. Anyway I have been
honored in the past week as few men were ever honored. Without quoting a price 1 have been able to
bring hundreds to my store. Many have bought because they have found merchandise of the fust quality
here at truly amazing prices. The sales have been fair! We haven't sold nearly as much as we wanted
to. and perhaps we won't, but the story of our prices and the story of the quality merchandise we are sac
rificing is bound to travel to be talked about by people who have actually visited our store m the past week.
I have not and will not buy a mass of cheap jewelry for this sale. My only idea is to retire from the
active management of this business in a manner that will not handicap the next generation when they as
sume charge of the business that I have labored to build up. I am not taking advantage of the good name
of this institution to give the people cheap merchandise at an exorbitant profit! If I can dispose ot the
present stock we carry I will be happy. That is all I want !
There is no hocus-pocus about my effort to Shift the Burden ! It is just a crisis that I am facing and that
every man who reaches my age must face. I am trying to solve it in the same legitimate, honest manner
that I have solved the many minor problems of my business in the years past
The old House of Henrichsen will continue. It will grow greater and bigger. It will be -here fifty
years hence, as it was fifty years ago. Knowing this, I must, from a selfish motive, protect the only heri
tage my children will have.
To quote prices is useless. The layman can be easily deceived in the quality of precious stones and high
class jewelry. You do not find diamonds sold for less than cost that is ridiculous ! You do not see sterling
table silver in good patterns sold for less than cost--that is absurd !
All we say is that we don't want a profit I am going to Shift the Burden. We are offering the
greatest values in the history of this firm. Knowing the reputation of the house and the quality of our
stocks, this should De sumcieni 10

realizing a large amount of money is
