All Meaey Vtaaaaeere.
The two men. who appeared at the
rooniliiar-houaa last Monday, are sup
posed lo have ben recent arrival In
the city, for they Inquired aa to the
location of the Orfon Klectrlc Depot,
where thry had left a trunk. The
trunk, apparently, waa the property of
the smaller man. who paid In advance
for the room, and aeented well provided
with money, tie waa the one later
found dead, with no money of any de
acrlptlon in hla clothes or belongings.
The murderer Is described as a heavy
Jowled man, between : and 28 year
old. S feet to t feet 7 Inches tall,
and wain-bine; about 1SS pounds, tie
bad a full face, heavy chin, was smootn
(Ravin and had dark hair. When last
seen be wore a blue suit and shoes
well run down at the heela, and carried
a tan leather and a wicker auitcaae.
InvrnttKBiion yesterday dfxclceed the
followlnic events leading up to and im
mttiiatrly succeeding; the murder:
Monday allcruoun two men appeared
at the rooming-house at 407 Stark
street and Inquired for a room in which
light housekeeping might be done, as
they Intended to cook home of their
meals in their room. After some quib
bling over the rental, they were given
the "first floor front." one of the best
rooms in the house.
One man. slicht, foreign-appearing,
and speaking broken English and the
one later found murdered, gave a to
fcoid-piece to his companion, who tend
ered It to the landlady, and received
change for a wet-k's rental of the room.
The second man was heavier set. and
took the initiative in all arrangements
at the rooming-house. He spoke ex
cellent English.
The men appeared to he model room
ers, the short time both were alive.
not speaking to anv other of the occu
pants of the house, and attending
strictly to their own affairs. In the
one extended conversation Mrs. Ue
Corsey held, the elder, but smaller man
told her he had lived about 26 years
in Boston and was fond of that city
Uuiet la Ominous.
The first intimation of anything
wrong was on Thursday. The room
seemed peculiarly free from sounds of
conversation and but one man could
be heard moving about. No sounds of
anr struggle were overheard by any
lodgers. That night the big man ap
peared at his door every time a lodge:
passed down the hallway and peered
suspiciously after the passtrrsby.
The man was plainly nervous, and
spoke but once, and then to complain
of a noise hy other iotigers.
Friday the man was heard moving
about Ira the early morning. He went
out late in the morning, but returned
soon. In the nftertion he put the trunk
in a hired wagon, took his suitcases
and drove away.
The actions of the man. who gave
his .name as "F.d Hopkins." when he
appeared at the Jlodel livery stables,
at Fifth and Iavis streets, Friday at
11:30 A. M . appear, in the light of
later discoveries, to be significant.
'I want a rig to take, some chickens
out to the country in, be explained to
U. K. llowitt. manager of the stables.
He finally selected a rubber-tired
light wagon with canopy top.
ason Kaaaard Akrad.
Just what I want. Be sure and hold
It for me. I'll be back this after
noon," he told the liveryman.
At 2 o'clock he returned for the ve
hicle. The wagon was Identified yes
terday as the one which took the trunk
am ay from tne t.iaric srreei nouse.
The conveyance was returned to the
stable shortly after i o'clock.
Well, did you get the chickens away
all right?" the deliveryman asked.
cheerily. The man looked startled.
wheeled and walked away without an
swering. That was the last time he
waa seen. Trie picture or tne supposeo

Mr. Howitt as the man who hired the
wagon.

A third person for whom the police
are looking Is a young man whom they
believe has no direct connection with
the murder but who aided the sup
posed murderer to load th- trunk on
the wagon. He did not come from the
stable with the wagon, hut was riding
with the man believed to be Bartholo
mew when the wagon drew up in front
of the lodging-house. He assisted in
lifting the heavy trunk into the wagon.
and. according to Mrs. Jessie Althor.
landlady at 105 Slark. drove the wagon
away.
Detective Captain Baty is offering a
reward of 5 If the young man will
appear at police headquarter and tell
II he knows of the attair. l ne oni-
cer believes he is not an accomplice in
any w;.y but was picked up on the
street by "Bartholomew" as an aid.
and probably dropped after the wagon
was out of sight or tse nouse.
The young man was described as
about 2J years old, with gray coat, and
trousers rolled up over logging boots.
Detectives Hill and Howell located
the stables in the afternoon, and De
tectives Hoyle and Cahill drove the
wagon around to the house, and it was
positively Identified.
J e Hamilton, a staple noy at tne
Model barn, was reported to have
scrubbed blood smears from the bed
of the wagon upon Its return Friday
