-Special.) By a combination of weight,
experience and luck, the University of
Oregon football team won from Whit
man College by a score of 21 to 0. The
scores were made by Malarkey and
Monteith. Huntington kicked goal each
time. Huntington also tried four place
kicks but falleo to get any of them be
tween the goal posts. The game was
characterized by ragged playing on
both sides.
Whitman's fault lay chiefly in wait
ing for the plays rather than going in
to them. Oregon was penalised fre
quently, and in the last quarter the
game was delayed by time taken out by
Oregon.
Whitman kicked off to Oregon, who
scored on straight football in the first
five minutes of play. Malarkey put the
ball over, and Huntington kicked goal.
Oregon Kicked to Whitman, who lost
the ball on a fumble. Oregon made
first down twice and was penalized for
off-side, but a successful forward pass
put the ball in striking distance, and
Monteith went over for Oregon's sec
ond touchdown. Huntington kicked
goal. Oregon kicked oft to a touchback.
but Whitman was unable to make
yardage and punted. The score at the
end of the first quarter was 14 to 0.
Oreaon, Threatens Twite.
In the second period Whitman held
Oregon and. though Huntington tried
two place kicks, no scores were made.
The half ended with the ball on Whit
man's 20-yard line.
Early in the thlrJ quarter Oregon,
aided by a costly fumble by Whitman,
put the ball over for the last score.
I .larkey carried the ball and Hunting
ton kicked goal. Whitman was unable
to make yardage and was forced to
punt whenever it got the ball. The
quarter ended with, the ball in Whit
man territory. .
In the final period Bezdek, sent in a
number of substitutes and the Whit
man team began to make consistent
gains for the first time in the game.
Oregon took time out on every occasion
and the game ended with the ball on
Orecon's 45-yard line.
Oresa Wins on Straight Play.
The Oregon team made almost all of
their gains by straight line plays and
only one of their forward passes was
completed. Though Oregon has had
much more experience than Whitman,
ita playing at times was ragged. Ore
gon had all of the breaks In luck, re
covering all but two of the fumbles
made by either team. The Whitman
men, six of whom were freshmen,
showed the same lack of experience
that was evident in the O. A. C. game.
Hoover and McDonald played a great
game, but the odds against them were
too great. Whitman was on the de
fensive practically all the time and did
not have a chance to show much in of
fensive tactics.
Jaalarkey and Monteith were the
most consistent ground-gainers for the
visiting team and between them were
responsible for all of Oregon's scores.
Hoover and McDonald were Whitman's
stars, though Gensel, at left half, and
Busch, at defensive end. were respon
sible for stopping many of Oregon's
plays.

Oregon '-Coffin" Prematurely Bur
led Niglit Before Contest.
'WHITMAN COLLEGE. Walla Walla,
Wash.. Oct. 23. (Special.) The rally
held by the Whitman College students
last night was the biggest affair of its
kind that has ever been seen in Walla
Walla. The Walla Walla Commercial
Club acted in conjunction with the col
lege, and the Elks fife and drum corps
turned out to lead the parade. Start
ing at the corner of Main and Palouae
streets, the procession led down the
main streets of the town. Led by the
drum corps, the Whitman girls and the
Whitman and Oregon teams followed
in automobiles. Jake Kaufman, driv
ing & team of freshmen and followed
by a crowd of Whitman. axuzentB, came
next. In the rest of the procession
were several floats representing the
hoped-for outcome of the game today.
One of these floats carried the coffin
of Oregon, which was hauled to An
keny Field and burned, while howling
fanatics wailed for the dead. Around
the fire the students were led in their
yells and dispersed.
A preliminary to this celebration we.s
held yesterday morning after the reg
ular chapel services. City Attorney .1.
p. Xeal and Everett Smith, former
Whitman football coach, spoke for the
townspeople, while Yell King Norton,
Vice-President Glsla Elliott, of the As
sociated Students, and Coach Bofteske
spoke for the students.

Fireman Working Hard for Match at
Rose City Club Tuesday.
That Walter Knowlton will be in
shape for his bout with Ralph Gryman
Tuesday night at the Rose City Club

been working hard every day in order

Considerable interest ia being mani
fested in the bout between Jack Root
and Art Wilson, two heavyweights.
Root has been endeavoring to break
away from the wrestling game in fa
ovr of boxing for some time, and li Is

'.change. It will be remembered that
Root picked Frank Kendall as a trial-
horse about a year ago and failed in
his effort to win the decision over the
former iceman.
Olympic Club Smoker Arranged.
Sol Cohen, the boy promoter, said
yesterday that he had resurrected his
Olympic Club and Intended giving a
boxing smoker a week from Tuesdav
or ednesday night in the Arion Hall,
headquarters of Charles jost's late Im
perial Club. Cohen said Bobby Evans
would do the matchmaking for the first
card.
Princeton Takes Soccer Game.
PRINCETON, N. J.. Oct. 23. The
Princeton soccer team defeated Cor
nell here today in the opening game
of the intercollegiates by a score of 1
to 0. Bird made the goal for Princeton.
