Sunday Din e m r :-v VISITORS ARRIVE TODAY tr "i v r '-" I " - - -V I Sightseeing Trips, Receptions and Dinners - Planned to Entertain City's Guests Daring Their Stay in Portland.' When Portland wakes up this morn ing its residents will find the West Side of the city transformed into a regular checkerboard, with red and blue ar rows marking the squares. The arrows will be there for a pur pose. They will guide the Shriners from distant states, who will visit Portland today, through some of the attractive parts of the city. It is estimated that more than 1000 Shrine delegates on their way to the Seattle conclave, which opens tomor row, will be in Portland this morning, afternoon and evening. San Reception Programme Complete. Portland Shriners have elaborately planned to er.tertafn them. They will provide them with sight-seeing ex cursions by automobile through the city and its environs, and will enter tain them with luncheons, dinners and other informal receptions. First to arrive this morning will be Rajah Temple, of Reading, Pa., and Pyramdi Temple, of Bridgeport, 100 strong, who will come in over the Southern Pacific at 7:15 and at 7:30. re spectively. They will have breakfast in their own dining-car. after which a committee, headed by A. H. Lea, will conduct the Bridgeport delegation to the Oregon Hotel in automobiles. The Oregon will be Pyramid Temple's head quarters durnig the remainder of their stay here. E. J. Jaeger is chairman of the com mittee to receive the Beading contin gent, who will have headquarters at the Multnomah. They will have lunch at that hotel and immediately after lunch will start on the trip over the Columbia River Highway to Oneonta Oorge. At 10 o'clock the automobiles will call and take the Bridgeport visitors on a scenic drive through the city, ar riving at the automobile club on the Sandy River in time for lunch. Sub-Parties. Exchange Transportation After lunch they will start up the Columbia River Highway, stopping at Oneonta Gorge. They will remain at the gorge until the arrival of the steamer Dalles City, bearing the members of El Jebel Temple, of Denver, and Tangier Temple, of Omaha. Through the cour tesy of The Dalles. Portland and As toria Navigation Company the steamer will be permitted to exchange passen gers, the Bridgeport and Reading Shriners returning to Portland by steamer and the Denver and Omaha members journeying to Portland by au tomobile. Meanwhile the Denver Omaha special train will continue to Portland "light." to be boarded here again in the evening for the final leg of their Journey to Seattle. Harvey Beckwith and Phil Metschan. Jr., chairmen, respectively, of the Den ver and Omaha reception committees, will go to The Dalles this morning to meet the special train and to escort the visitors to the boat for their trip down the river.- Sub-Texas Shriners Bring Band. Another special wilj arrive over the Southern Pacific at noon, bearing mem bers of Hella Temple, of Dallas. Tex., and of El Mina Temple, of Galveston, Tex. R. W. Schmeer.is chairman of a committee that will meet them. The Dallas Shriners are carrying a band and an orchestra composed of their own members and expect to furnish some concerts for the people of Port land during their stay here. They will leave for Seattle at 11:55 tonight. El Korah Temple, of Boise, and El Kalah Temple, of Salt Lake City, will put m their appearance at the Union Station at 12:20. arriving over the O. W. R. & N. line. Fred A. Jacobs is chairman of their reception committee. Like the other visitors, they will be taken on sight-seeing trips through some of the scenic parts of the city. Kansas Shriners will arrive on another special at the Union Station at 12:10 this afternoon. They are traveling over the Union Pacific and O.-W. R. & N. lines. H. W. Fries is chairman of the committee to receive them. This dele gation is headed by Abdallah Temple, of Leavenworth, Kan., and l.sis Temple, of Salina. Kan. Each is accompanied by a uniformed patrol and Abdallah Temple carries a band of 60 pieces. Sab-Evening Entertainment Arranged. Jesse R. Lasswell. of 544 Elizabeth street, a former resident of Kansas and a member of Abdallah Temple, has ar ranged to entertain the entire Kansas delegation at his home on Sunday, aft ernoon. This evening all the visitors will be guests of Al Kader Temple at an en tertainment at the Multnomah Hotel. Colored pictures of the Columbia River I Highway will be shown, illustrating lectures by Samuel C. Lancaster and Henry Berger. Jr. Inasmuch as many women will ac-1 company the visitors, a committee of Portland women the relatives of Port land Shriners has been formed to as sist in the task of entertainment. Mrs. Bailey has been elected president of this committee and Mrs. E. L. Pettis secretary. Two separate routes of travel have been selected for the sight-seeing trips through the West Side. Here is where the arrows come in. , Blue arrows will mark the directions for a pleasant two-hour drive and blue and red ar rows together a four-hour drive. Both routes confine themselves to the West Side exclusively, and, on'ac-ount of the deplorable condition of Wash ington street above Twentieth, all ma chines are instructed to turn north on Seventeenth street to avoid that strip of highway.
