Professor of Botany In the University of Oregon. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu gene, Or., July 3. (Special.) The giant fireweed. an Interest ing plant. Is often found covering large areas on our hillsides, especially in burned-over regions, whence the name fireweed. From the resemblance of its leaves to those of the willow tt is known -in some localities as the willow herb. The scientific name is Epilobium. from two Greek words meaning . upon the pod. . because the parts of the flower seem to spring from the top of the seed pod or ovary. The stem varies from lour to six feet in height and the leaves are narrow and from four to eight inches long. (Figure 1.) In any given species of these plants the flower colors are not constant, but vary from white through rose to purple. This color difference appears unexplalnable, for sometimes the whole variation will occur In neighboring plants. A more detailed study of the flower shows the calyx of four green lobes united to each other below and con tinuous with the outer covering of the pod. The four petals are attached to the calyx and alternate with its lobes. There are eight stamens also attached to the calyx. A single pistil grows from the top of the ovary or seed pod, and at its upper end divides into a four-parted stigma which opens when the stigmatic surface is receptive to the pollen. (Figure 2.) As the plant matures these part3 drop away, leaving the pod to elongate and enlarge. A cut across a pod shows that it has four cavities and vertical rows of seeds attached to the center. When the pods are ripe they split lengthwise into four valves which open and allow the seeds to es cape. Each seed is provided with a coma, or cluster of hairs, for the pur pose of wind dissemination. (Fig tire 3.) The two lower flowers of figure 2 show clearly that this is a case of obligate cross-pollination. In the right-hand individual the pistil Is depressed and the stigma closed (figure 2A, while the stamens are erect and mi i shedding their pollen, hence self-pollination is impossible, for there Is no stigma to receive it. In the left-hand one, however, the stamens are with ered and depressed, having shed all their pollen, but the pistil Is erect and the stigmatic surfaces are exposed ready to recei-e the pollen brought from another flower (figure 2B).
