The well-known and much-admired Ffunder cottage is occupied by the family, who were lately joined by Mrs. W. E. Grace and Mrs. Mitchell and their families. Dr. and Mrs. P. J. Payne and family are in their cottage for the Summer. Mrs. F. Rothschild and family are established in a cottage here. Dr. J. W. Rosenfeld and family have been among the early Summer settlers here, occupying one of the pretty cot tages in the meadow. Rabbi Jonah, B. Wise and Mrs. Wise and family are established in a cottage in the meadow for the season. The Charles Rosenfelds also are among the cottage colony who will pass the Summer here. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Reckan have a cottage in the grove for the Summer. Mrs. W. D. Walker is occupying her attractive little cottage for the Sum mer. F. M- Wheeler and family are sea Boners here among the cottage colony. Mr. and Mrs. Philip Grossmayer and family are occpying their cottage for the season. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lang's cottage also is occupied by the family for the season. Mrs. J. Nelson, of Denver, arrived Friday for a short stay at Gearhart Hotel. Mrs.' Roy Marx and Miss Ruth and Daniel Marx will pass several days at the hotel. From Toronto, Canada, come Mr. and Mrs. Norman Ross for a short stay at Gearhart Hotel. The party of sorority girls who have decided to remain over the week-end at the hotel includes Misses Marguerite Behman. Marion Mead. Pearl Van Sick len, Anna and Mary Celarius, Ruth Hadfleld, Iphigene Maloney. Leonora Kmerson. Nina Porter, Ida Lotspeich, Dorothy Stevens and Lucie Phleiger, M. I. Cameron and H. C. Uthoff were among the arrivals yesterday who will pats several days at the hotel. The Tilzer cottage is opened and Miss Comport and the Tilzer children are ensconced therein. Nellis Hamlin and Oliver Wassell are passing the Summer in & cottage at Gearhart and devote their time to mo toring around the scenio roads. SEASIDE -WELCOMES THRONGS 'Great Whit Way' of Gotham Copied by Beach Kenort. SEASIDE, Or., July 3. (Special.) Each train steaming into Seaside de posits larger crowds of holiday seekers, bent on recreating and resting in this busy little resort. The young people "have the time of their lives" in this little city. They start early in the morning with swimming, run the gamut of diversions, including roller skating, riding, surting, dancing and motion pic ture shows. The streets are in excellent chape, the hard-surfaced roads making motoring a delight, and the main thor oughfare, like all growing cities, has been called "Broadway." and is a blaze of glory, in correct imitation of tha ;"Great White Way" of Gotham. The streets are strung "with myriads of lights lengthwise and crosswise from Jie railroad station to the mighty Pa cific. The big swimming tank at the head of the boardwalk is one of the most popular sports on the beach. Her crowds of men and women, as well as children, daily gather, all eager to be come proficient in the art of swimming. They will have races, stunts and trapeze performances for the benefit of the spectators. Fireworks already are proclaiming the approach of Independence day, and the Fourth, to be celebrated tomorrow, will be a specially merry one. Band concerts will form part of the pro gramme, and numerous other features will make the day memorable. All along the boardwalk cottages are being prepared for the occupancy of beach habitues, and in many cases the owners have given the cottages over to the use of frlenda and relatives while they Journey to the fair. Hotel Moore baa Introduced an Inter esting novelty, that of having exhibi tions of society dances by Mr. and Mrs. Jay March Fetters, formerly of the Hotel Multnomah, and previous to that of San . Francisco. The . Fetters each evening give exhibitions of their latest creations, and also' Instruct the dev otees of the Moore grill.' The grill is filled nightly with merrymakers, all bent on learning the newest and pret tiest steps, and they are being carefully censored by the Fetters, who are acting as hosts for these dances. Miss Leah Cohen occasionally com plies to the urgent pleas of admiring friends to come to the grill and sing for them, and she also has accepted the position of soloist in the Seaside Catho lic Church. She recently appeared for a week's engagement at the "Empress Theater in Portland. Among the recent cottagers who have reached here and plan to stay for the Summer are Mrs. Adna Sharpsten and daughter. Miss Helen Sharpsten. They are occupying the Grabel cottage on the north boardwalk. Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Locke and family are established in their attractive cot tage for the Summer. Colonel and Mrs. David M. Dunne and daughters. Misses Gladys, Helen and Dorothy, and son Jack, are occupying their cottage for the Summer. Miss Getta Wasserman is domiciled In her cottage at Wahannah, and later In the season will be Joined by her sis ters, Mrs. Henry Hausmann and Dr. and Mrs. R. J. Chipman. with their children. Alex Ruggles Gilbert passed 'the week-end in Portland visiting Mr. and Mrs. T. Luke. Mrs. Ida M. Harris and daughter, of St. Helens, opened her cottage here last week and will remain for the Summer. The Balise Labbe beach home on the south boardwalk is now opened for the Summer, and is occupied by Mr. Labbe and his son and grandchildren. In the Rick cottage are John & Rick and his daughter and her children, who plan to pass the Summer here. Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Steinlein ar rived Thursday and are occupying their cottage for the season. Miss C. H. Percival, of Montgomery drive, Portland, has arrived and will occupy her pretty new cottage in the grove for the season. She is entertain ing a party of young friends. The E. M. Chandlers, of Burbank. Wash., are occupying the Gilbert cot tage on the boardwalk. Pere Langlard. a clergyman of Sea side, passed a week in Portland and Is again in Seaside. In a snug little cottage in the grove Is Mrs. George A. Pell, of Portland, with her family. Ball and family for the Summer. Mrs. Matt G. Ennis and family, of Walla Walla, arrived Wednesday and are occupying the Bartch cottage for the Summer in Hermosa Park. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Nelson and chil dren, of Pendleton, reached here recent ly and are now domiciled In their cot tage in Hermosa Park. They are dev otees of motoring. E. R. Miller is passing a few days at Elk Creek. Mrs. F. S. Dement is a recent arrival, having opened her cottage In Hermosa Park on Thursday for the season. The Seaside Civic Improvement Club is one of the most useful and popular organizations in Seaside. .It has been opened all year under the direction of the Woman's Club, of which Dr. Lena Hodges recently has been elected presi dent. The reading-room la won - ronlzed at all times, and the recent county rair ror the benefit of the club proved a tremendous success. There Is to be a tag sale to increase their funds, and Mrs. I. E. Solomon, of Port land, is superintending the sale. E. C. Frost Is president of the club, and on Tuesday nlsrht a meettna- Woman's Club wa held, reports for the season being made and ways and means discussed to provide funds for the work of the club for the Summer. They keep a supply of current litera ture on band, as well as fiction and standard works, which have been pur cnased with moneys derived from bene fits in the past. NEWPORT 6E.1SO.V IS BEGCJf Two Trains Dally Carry Visitors and ; Band Concerts Are On. NEWPORT, Or, July 3. (Special.) Two trains daily, concerts every even ing by the local Rod and Gun Club band, excellent weather, a Fourth of July celebration and a five-day Chau taqua are evidences that the Summer season at this beach has really begun. The Corvallis & Eastern Railroad, to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic to this resort, has added an ex tra train to the schedule. This train will leave Albany early in the morning, reaching Newport about noon. The sec ond train arrives here In the evening. .The evening band concerts that were so popular six or seven years ago, but which have been discontinued during the past few years, are now a regular attraction again.. The-band, under the direction of C. F. Averill. was recently organized to meet the demand for mu sical entertainment for beach visitors, and will furnish music at the boat landing every evening. The arrival of the ferry "Newport" Is the event of the day here and people throng the wharf to greet the Incoming- visitors. Crowds of 1000 or more are of regular occurrence at the height of the season. To furnish entertainment for these people and to welcome the Incoming visitors are the principal reasons fur the organisation of the band. The weather, too. Is ideal. Newport ers acquainted with the weather con ditions of the resort for the past score or more or years, aver that the pres ent weather Is unexcelled. The sun shiny days have been conductive to beach parties and trips to neighbor ing points of Interest, to the Govern ment Lighthouse. Devil's Punch Bowl. Agate Beach. Otter Rocks or the In dian Reservation. Bonfire parties have also found much favor among the younger set. The past week has wit nessed the highest tides of the season and surf bathing has been indulged in by those who prefer the cold waters of the Pacific to warm, though salty, water of the Natatorium. Newport, following the precedent of five years' standing, which has be come almost an established custom, will celebrate the anniversary of the country's independence Monday. July 5. The programme, besides the cus tomary patriotic exercises and ora tions, will Include boat races on the bay. drills by the United States Coast Guards. Indian war dances and an il luminated boat parade. A committee of the Rod and Gun Club Is in charge of the arrangements for the celebra tion. Joseph Patterson, of Portland. Is a member of the committee. Valley cities have nothing on New port as regards a Chautauqua. For live days, from July 10 to 15. the Summer population will have a number of added diversions tn the form of musical con certs and lectures The city park, a natural out-door theater, is the lo cation of the Chautauqua. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas K. Campbell, of Salem, are stopping at the Abbey. Mr. Campbell Is a member of the State Railroad Commission. Mr. and Mra J. L. Baker, of Eu gene, are listed among the patrons of the McDonald House. Nye Beach. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Johnson. who have been passing a brief vacation at Tent City, have departed for Chicago, their future home. Both Mr. and Mrs Johnson are former students of the Oregon Agricultural College and for merly lived In Corvallis. Mr. and Mrs W. F. Elliott and son. Howard Emerson, of Eugene, reached the beach the forepart of the week and are established In the Tower house at Nye beach. Mrs. P. M. Chandler, of Portland, reached this resort Monday and Is at the Abbey. Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Nichols and daughter, of Walla Walla, Wash, who reached the beach a week ago by auto, have returned to their Washington home. The Nichols stopped at the Nlcholal. Dewey Brown, of Corvallis, was an arrival the fore part of the week. Mrs. E. T. Hedlund and son, of Port land, are recent arrivals and will re main three weeks. Mrs. Lorena Wise, of Salem. Many of the beautiful homes that decorate the paved thoroughfares are already occupied, and those that have not yet arrived have made arrangements for the unboardlng of windows, the dusting of carpels and the details of preparation. The smaller hotels are comfortably filled, and with the opening of the big Bayocesn Hotel and the natatorium the gay life of the place Is sssuredly la full swing. The ferry scross the bay Is now on a regu lar schedule that makes transportation connections with a minimum elapse of time. The ever-popular bungalowettea are filling up rapidly, but with the In creased number of new cottages, hotels and camping quarters, accommodations are provided for a large number of va cationist. The beach this season Is at Ita best, and nuroerbua figures even thus early dot the sands Intermittently, dashing Into the wet embrace of Father Neptune with all the Joy of being alive and close to the freedom of Nature.
