Ergro or poBsibly hence Portland quit after four straight wins, and the Oaks romped home ahead yes terday before 2680 paid admissions. Third place again. Score: Oakland 5, Portland 4. Jack Ness, whose batting average is something iike .391 for the season, was back in harness for the Oaks. Jack whacked out a single in the third in ning and boosted his remarkable hit ting streak to 31 consecutive games. This is a piece of news, but it had little to do with the Oaks win, for Jack's one hit didn't count 'much. Jimmy Johnston Too Fast. What really beat the Beavers was pome Tycobbean stuff on " the paths by the world's cnampion base-pilferer, James Johnston. Johnston scored all the way from second base on a slow grounder to Stumpf in the initial in ning, and, looking back over the aft ernoon's events, this bit of leg yes, we'll say it legerdemain really cut quite an important swath in the sum mary. Milton Reed, late Beaver, played short for the Oaks and began the game by beating out an Infield hit. John ston's single to right and an infield out put them around to second and third, and both scored on Gardner's grounder to Stumpf. Stumpf played the ball rather nonchalantly and, while Gardner was safe only by inches, those Inches cost the game. . Keefe Falls to Make Good. Bobby Keefe opened on the mound for Portland against Ralph Rose Prui ett.. Neither one made good. Keefe walked two men in the fourth inning, and successive hits by Reed, Middleton and this same Johnston fellow boosted the remaining three Oak tallies across the rubbery home plate. Higginbotham then warmed up and was sent to Keefe's rescue in the sixth inning. , Higg pitched wonderful ball the last four innings, yielding only two hits. Portland began getting under Prui ctt's skin along about the fifth inning, and he, too. was benched in the sixth, frame. A right-hander named Rem neas, almost tall enough to set the hands on the Oregonian tower clock without the need of a step ladder, suc ceeded Pruiett. Remneas Shows Fine Form. Remneas was released outright by Salt Lake a few days ago. but showed a lot of stuff for a castoff. In his four Innings he whiffed no fewer than six of the Beaver wrecking crew. Late in the ninth, however, after he had fanned Davis and Derrick, Mac's bunch be gan getting next to his fast ones. Stumpf belted one against the deep center fence for a two-base hit and Bates scored him by a sizzling drive to left. This brought the score up to a 5-4 balance. Bates stole second,' which, was unnecessary because Remneas gave Hillyard free transportation to first base. So it was when Bill Speas came to bat and ended the rally by popping out to Ness. A neat single at this juncture would have made quite a difference. For the benefit of the "bugs," Port land's four registrations were appor tioned in this manner one in the third, two in the fifth and one in the ninth. Portland had the bags full In the third on singles by Davis and Stumpf and a walk to Derrick. Bates drove In one by a single through Fruiett, but that was all. Pruiett Goes In Fifth. Two-baggers by Davis and Bates and a single by Speas brought in the two in the fifth that put the rollers under Fruiett. Today's game will begin at 2:30 o'clock and the rival pitchers likely will be Coveleskie. for Portland, against Prough. Tomorrow two games will be on the bill, at 10:30 A. M. and at 2:30 P. M.
