Oakland evened tip the series with the Beavers yesterday afternoon at Recreation Park by taking: the fourth contest by the score of 4 to 0. This victory again puts the Oaks at the head of the second division, Portland coins; back to the cellar. Harry Abies, on the mound for the Oaks, was master of the situation, and held the Beavers to five hits, so well scattered that he never was in much real danger. On the other hand, the visitors tapped "Rube" Evans for nine eafe swats, four of which were two baggers. The day was ideal, and. considering the attendance of late, a goodly crowd was on hand. It was the largest Sat urday crowd that has been out to the baseball battlefnents for some time. Speas In as rinrh Hitter. Portland made an effort' to secure a tally In the ninth, when Captain Sill gpeaa went in to pinch hit for Ty Lober, who had failed to connect with the sphere during the afternoon's entertainment. However, with two down. Bill did not have any too bright prospects before him, and his fly to Johnston, in left, sent the Beaver fans home to water their lawns. Xhe Beavers will have two more cracks at the -Oaks this afternon.be fore they make their getaway for the south. A double matinee will be served this afternoon. The first contest, with Keefe or Krause, for Portland, on the mound, opposing Klawitter, for the vis itors, will start at 1:30. Klawitter also intends to twirl the second game if he puts one over on his former boss in the initial encounter. Hlgginbotham will pitch- the second game for the locals. Klawitter won the opening game of the series for the Oaks. Beavers Have Chance to Jump. Two wins for the Beavers this aft ernoon will give them a healthy hold on the leadership of the second dlvi fcion, while, if they break even, the QaJts will return to -California in the same place in which they came north. The third inning of yesterday's con test was when the Oaklanders started piling up their runs. Two walks in succession, a sacrifice hit, an infield out and a two-bagger by Ness netted them two tallies. A walk, wild pitch and single grave the Oaks still another tally in the fourth. The next run came in the sixth Inning, which Elliott opened by tapping the ball for two sacks. ' Guest sent Elliott to third with a single, and he scored on Litschi's double. Mlddleton, in center field for the Oaks, and Lober for the locals pulled the sensations of the afternoon. Mld dleton made a one-handed catch of what looked like a two-bagger for Evans in the fifth, and Lober cut Gardner off at the plate in the second after Lltschl had singled to left. WILLIS BUTLER IS KING PIN Spokane Still Satisfied WiUi Deal That Lost It Remarkable Butter for . Coltrin Haworth's Per centage Highest in League. An All-Star team selected from Northwestern League players on field ing ability alone would find a lot of Victoria men on it. The Maple Leafs are not only a great hitting and base running team, they have been, playing a bang-up article of ball in the field, particularly the infield, and appear in every department of the game to be entitled to the honors of leading the league. Willis Butler is having a great year, and while Spokane folks are entirely satisfied with the deal that took him away and brought in Bobby Coltrin, it is freely admitted here that the way the brilliant Leaf lnfielder is going right now he is entitled to the honor of being the most valuable all-around ballplayer in the league to date. He not only leads in individual batting, but also In fielding his shortstop posi tion. He also tops the list in run getting and base stealing. Butler is the batting king only of the regulars.
