Internal lengthening, steady development and rigoroua economy were the watchwords of the board of regents of the Cniver eity of Oregon toaay. when they met to determine the policy along which the university should proceed under the millage tax. which Koes into effect April 1. The details of the policy proved so complicated, however, that the whole question was placed in the hands of 'a committee consisting; of Regents Miller, IHxon. Hamilton. Churchill and Newell to a-o over thoroughly and report to a second meeting which will, convene within two weeks. Salaries Are Increased. -Resides aDDointing the special com mittee the regents completed three items of business. They increased 10 $25ot) the salary of Professor John F. Bovard. of the department of zoology, who is now in the East and is consider ing an attractive offer from one of the large Eastern universities, and would have accepted unless inducements were offered here, and they gave to Mrs. E. S. Parsons, assistant professor, the rank of full professor with voting power in faculty meetings and in increase of $200 a year in salary. She. also, is the re cipient of pressing offers elsewhere, and it was desired to retain her services. The board also signed a voucher for the current pavment on the seven-acre tract south of the athletic field, which was purchased last year. Eleven Resjents) Present. Eleven of the 13 regents were pres ent at the meeting. They were: Fed eral Judge Bean, president; Governor Withycombe. Mrs. George T. Gerlinger, of Dallas: William Smith. Baker; Frederick V. Holman, Portland: Milton A. Miller, Portland: S. H. Friendly. Eugene: W. K. Xewell. Gaston: A. C. Dixon. Eugene: Charles H. Fisher. Sa lem: James W. Hamilton. Roseburg. Those unable to be present were: Ben "V. Olcott, Secretary of State, and J. A. Churchill. Superintendent of Public In struction. The issues of the construction of ad ditional new buildings on the Univer sity of Oregon campus, the employing of a large number of new professors and instructors and the issue of bring ing to Eugene, the entire University of Oregon law school came before the board. Three Mew Bnlldingn Wanted. The buildings contemplated are one for the school of music, one for the schocl of commerce and one .for the school of education. These may all be combined in one. or may be united in two buildings, if the board adopts the plan of the president. Their construc tion, if granted by the board, is ex pected to take place within the next two years. In the tentative, report of the presi dent two additional Instructors are asked for in the school of architecture at salaries of $2000 each and $500 for equipment. "Final action was asked at this time en the part of the board for the organ ization of a complete law course in Eugene. The first-year law, reported the oresldent, "was offered a year ago; the second was added this year, and a class is ready for the third." Members of the board of regents said that the board will decide within a few days whether or not Eugene is to get the entire law school or none. The sentiment is said to favor Eugene. An additional instructor at $2500 Is asked in this department under the present condition. Additional Inilrurtora Desired. Three additional instructors are asked in the department of economics and sociology at $7700. The extension tlepartment asks another man at $1800. The school of Journalism asks the in stallation of an $8000 printing plant and an instructor in printing at $1500. Additional courses in art are asked at an expenditure of $1500. Additional instructors were reported needed as follows: Education, one at $600, one at $1200: rhetoric, one at $2500: library, one at 900; Latin, one at $1400: zoology, one at $1000. The board granted the expenditure of $750 for an exhibit at the Panama Faclflc Exposition. BRICE VALLACE NOW IS 88 Four Generations Celebrate Birth of Former I.inn Treasurer. ALBANY. Or.. March -13. B. Marshall, in this city. He has 31 grandchildren and sev eral great-grandchildren, many of whom attended the celebration. The eight children are V. L. Wal lace. S. O. Wallace. F. E. Wallace and Mrs. Jennie Keebler. all of Lebanon: Robert Wallace and Mrs. Bertha Haw kins, of Portland, and Dr. J. P. Wal lace and Mrs. A. B. Marshall, of Al bany. Mr. Wallace was born in Anderson County. Tennessee. In 1S27. and came to Oregon in 1877. He settled on a farm near Lebanon and has resided. in this county ever since. For the past few years he has been staying with his daughter. In this city. He served as County Treasurer of Linn County from Wl to 1894. PEACE SERVICES ORDAINED Archbishop Christie Fixes March 21 as Date for Ceremonies. Archbishop Christie, head of the Catholic archdiocese of Oregon, has ordained that special peace services shall be held-on Passion Sunday. March 21, in all Catholic churches and chapels in accordance with a decree issued by the Secretary of State January 10. He is also suspected of obtaining $1100 on a draft in Milwaukee and 35000 on a draft in Memphis, both drafts being forgeries.- Detective Williams has been in Port land several days, but only received the necessary extradition papers yes terday. BINGER HERMANN TO SUE Ex-IIepresentative to Wage Fight for Frank Arant. ROSEBCRG, Or., March 13. (Spe cial.) Binger Hermann, ex-Represen-tatlv in Congress from this district, has signified his intention to bring suit against the Government in behalf -of Frank Arant, deposed Crater Lake Na tional Park superintendent, to recover back wages which he avers are due to Mr. Arant. Mr. Arant in 1913 was asked by Secretary Lane, of the Interior De partment, to resign in favor of "Will G. Steel. Mr. Arant refused to resign on the grounds that he held office under the classified Civil Service. .The matter was taken before the Civil Serv ice Commission, and it ruled in favor of Mr. Arant. ' Ex-Attorney-General McReynolds held differently, however, and upon his ruling Secretary Lane had . Mr. Arant removed by a Federal Marshal. ST. PAUL JfVOMA'N DIES Mrs. A. R. Coleman, 35 Years Old, Survived by Husband, Daughter. ST. PAUL, Or.. March 13. (Special.) Mrs. Anna Coleman, wife of A. R. Coleman, a prominent farmer of this section, died at the family home, two miles east of St. Paul, Wednesday, after a lingering illness of 'several months. Mrs. Coleman was born in Minnesota September 23, 1880, and came with her parents to Oregon In 1893. She was married to Mr. Cole man in 1901. Mrs. Coleman was active in church and social circles. She is survived by a husband and an 11-year-old daughter, Mildred. The funeral was conducted from the St- Paul Church this morning and burial was in the local cemetery.
